Is it just me or is anyone else having trouble with the new Tacoma? Mine is a 22 with the 3.5. I love the truck but off the lot day 1 I noticed the constant up and down shifting and when you drive the truck for gas mileage and it is around 1300-1500 rpms it seems as the truck is missing. The dealership tells me this is normal...that it sdoing what it is designed to do and they all do it. It dont seem normal to me. Any thoughts?

The truck really isn’t to bad, it loves to be driven in the upper rpm’s where it is designed.

I just bought one a week ago and am stunned at the lack of power going up hills on the highway. I already can’t wait for the day I sell it. I have a small hill right out of my driveway and the thing must shift three times going up the hill. My little Japjunker

I found its much easier to drive it in the higher RPMs and it gets fun. I've also experienced what you have described to a degree as well, and that every person I've spoken to that has a Tune on their Tacos (OVTune or KDMax) has said it has for the most part alleviated the problem. Some have said it turns it into a "completely different truck"

I don't find the issue that bad myself, but I don't drive for fuel economy and am definitely planning on a tune for my 2020 DCLB.

I had my truck tuned and it changed the shift points and the throttle response. It still doesnt like low rpm's (1200-1500) but its better

I'm expecting delivery of my 22 SR5 in a couple weeks, and I notice the comments about the shifting issues. My truck is going to be my daily driver, and is going to spend it's life on paved streets, and I'll also be pulling a small boat with it. I notice references to getting them tuned. What does this entail, and since I'm going to be towing a boat, is this worth doing? I plan on keeping this truck a LONG time. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Drive with ECT button on at all times. It’ll change its driving pattern to be more desirable.

Hoagie8, the tune I had done is the overland tailor 7.0 tune. It did help the shift points and the throttle response. It is absolutely not what I would call right. It still shifts hard at times and almost to point of slipping at other times. Ive had a dozen Toyotas...Tacoma, 4 Runner, Camry, Corolla...all engines from 22R to 4.0. This one is the least desirable. There is zero consistency with the transmission or the engine even with the tune. This truck hates low rpm's. 1200-1500 driving for fuel mileage this truck will miss. Im told its not a misfire but having worked on and messed with cars since I was 12 years old, and Im 52, I know what a miss is. As far as puling a boat, I cant answer that. I pulled an 18' trailer with mine before the tune and it pulled the same as without it. The shifting issues are that it never finds a gear. It is constantly shifting up or down. I wish you the best and I wouldn't try to deter you from taking delivery, however I will say that if I had it to do over again, Id never have gotten this truck. Good luck and God bless!

And I agree with Toyotahenry, driving with the ect button in does change it, but it definitely doesnt correct it

Pops...thank you for the info. I've been having 2nd thoughts about the truck for a few weeks now. I still might bail out of the deal. This would have been my 5th Toyota in the last 30 years. Sad to think it might not be what I hoped.

Apparently both of you are part of the 'I don't test drive things team' ?

Give it 30 days and dump it on Carvana, then come back and chest thump over how much $ you made.

I understand and I know my previous post sounds primarily negative. The truck does have its good points. I only wish Id have done more research and drove a couple before I ordered mine.

Clearwater Bill, I will sadly admit that with this truck Im guilty as charged with not test driving, however in my defense it is brand new and it is a Toyota. Whod have dreamed itd be like this lol. And Ive had a couple people tell me about the carvana thing

See the Tune thread here. One of the more popular ones.

It took me a while to get used to the way Toyota has programmed the engine & transmission for EPA & MPg's. With the spike in fuel prices, I'm recently appreciating the "ECO" mode.

When I drive through the mountains heading to the cabin I love using "S" mode for more controll and performance.

Tons of good info here on the Tacoma's "Force Value" and shifting details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbCAEscrJ8E&t=395s

If I'm understanding this right, with the auto trans, when you let off the gas to coast to a stop, the engine shuts down? Jeez I've riden in cars where the engine shuts off when stopped and when it starts up from a stop I get my head snapped into the head rest...annoying as HELL! I'm really having second thoughts about this truck after watching this guys video. I drove one a few months ago, and it didn't seem as bad as everyone says. Wondering now if Toyota really screwed up on this one.

Definitely test drive one for a bit. Maybe even find one to rent for a day to really get a feel for it. It’s a dog of an engine/tranny combination if you’re used to driving anything with some guts behind it. It gets the job done but with not much to spare or really any excitement to go with it. Even after supercharging it I’m not entirely impressed.

Even with that entirely negative sounding paragraph it’s still the midsize truck I would choose out of what’s on the market.
