I remember making hot cinnamon toast for my sister on my mom‘s ball and claw kitchen table. Maybe we wondered why afterwards it tasted a little funny but we ate it anyway. I figured out much later that it was the taste of the furniture polish coming off my moms table top, and we probably left big white toast-shaped marks on the varnish.

Where we lived my parents could give us each $.10 and we would walk to the matinee on Saturday and watch Batman smack the snot out of some criminal, and then there would be science fiction movies with martians or under-sea monsters and earthquakes on the ocean floor.

We only had those too-little boxes of cereal when we went camping and they were great, except for that powdered milk which I hated. At home there was plenty of milk and huge boxes of Wheaties and oatmeal, Maypo, Malto-meal, or Ralston’s cream of wheat.

We would eat that sitting on the floor, 3 feet in front of a black-and-white TV set, watching Fireball XL5, or Supercar, Johnny Quest, or some similar kiddy show. We moved around so much that we rarely ever got to see a whole season of any one particular show.

Until I read my dad’s 1947 Blue Jackets Manual, I thought the starboard engine was what sent you into space.

    “On our way home, Robert.”
    “On our way ‘ome…”

The puppetry was pretty bad, but I couldn’t tell you how bad the writing was because I was only 8.
I can still sing most of the song.

“My heart would be a fireball, each time I looked into your starry eyes…”

This was stuff that my children watched when they were seven and nine.

Oh, those shows were pretty bad . . . or so I thought, until they came out with Teletubbies & the purple dinosaur.

Liddsville was another kids show very much like H.R. Pufnstuf. It starred Charles Nelson Reilly as the lead weirdo. Grew up watching Captain Kangaroo and Tales of the Riverbank which starred rodents driving cars, sailing boats, and flying hot air balloons.

Many audiophiles want nothing to do with today's offerings but will snatch the older stuff up in a heartbeat.

If you want some fun, look at the price of 1980s BMX bikes. This is one that I built myself, I did get a couple of "bro deals" from a friend and had some of the parts already but I could probably get about $1000 for it now. I'd actually probably make more parting it out...

1985 Hutch Wind Styler..this is when BMX wasn't so cookie cutter. Much like old cars that you could tell what it was by the tails, an educated eye could tell what brand the bike was from a distance.

Didn't the Sugar Smacks have a bare chested Indian warrior leaning back with arms outstretched on a horse? Later it was replaced w/a frog character in cap & t-shirt.

The Sugar Smacks & Sugar Pops (cowboy pix) were my favorites! And the original King Vitamin!!

Still get Blu-Rays and 4K from them. Only way to really enjoy a 120" screen and Atmos system when your internet connection is 3Mbps DSL. I CAN actually stream successfully, but at lower resolutions. Come on Starlink!

My dad got me a blue Schwinn Sting Ray in '78. Graduated to a Mongoose BMX in 83 or 84. Quickly outgrew that and got a 10-speed racer. I destroyed that, ended up getting a 12-speed racer in the early 90's that I still have / ride today.

The Sting Ray was pretty much indestructable. The BMX was fun on the dirt trails, but after two years, I simply couldn't fit on it anymore. With the first racer, I still rode it like it was a BMX, which is why it got wrecked. My dad eventually gave them all away to neighbor kids.
