Another Overland tuned truck here, and sorry in advance, no other Tacoma tunes to compare it to.

Going by the description of the two on the Yotatune website the choice between the two seemed obvious to me. In brief, the KDmax being described as “A tune with peak power in high rpms, smoother shifting, sporty acceleration and predictable shifting.” as compared to the Overland tune, “Great low and mid end torque, equal high rpm power as other tunes and great shift points.”

My truck is my daily driver and I’m not running the 1/4 mile with my truck so I didn’t particularly see the need to have all the power towards the redline.
A couple messages to David from Yotatune confirmed my choice. He mentioned while tuning my truck that most are now choosing this tune as well, and some are even switching over to it from the competitors tunes.

While I haven’t put more than a couple hundred kilometers on it yet, I can tell you there is a noticeable difference. I opted for the light throttle and there’s no harsh acceleration off the line. The transmission also no longer seems to get confused over which gear it needs to be in when going up a hill. Also, while I know the tune doesn’t alter the adaptive cruise strategies, it does feel like there’s less gear hunting while using it.

So far so good, and if there’s any problems I’ll report back.

That's not really a fair characterization of KDMAX. There's more power at every part of the RPM range, especially down low.

I’m sure they’re both excellent choices, I was just quoting the available information that’s out there and why I chose Overlander over the other offerings.

I was actually able to test out both when getting my tune done. I did a blind test where I did not know which tune I was driving so I wouldn’t be swayed. I ended up preferring the overlander tune to me it felt like a more natural tune and the acceleration off the line felt like it wasn’t as jolty either. Been running this tune for about 6 months or so and I love it. It’s gotten to the point where it’s become so natural that I forget the truck is even tuned to begin with.

My honest opinion is that both KDMAX and the Overland Torque tunes will be better than stock.

A bunch of us created a network to offer bespoke tuning solutions as not one tune fits all.

Check out our website and social pages at Toyotatuningnetwork.com and connect with a tuning specialist to discuss your needs, wants and expectations.

As always, I’m serving tunes in the Pacific Northwest for anyone wanting a better driving Tacoma

Someone should open a tuning shop across the street from a high volume Toyota Tacoma dealership. Then after buddy takes the "factory" test drive, get him to try a tuned test drive. And a savvy Toyota dealership would be the owner of the tuning shop.:D

I am fairly certain Allan services that area on occasion. If you're up for a little bit of a drive, I'm sure you can meet up and get yourself situated.

There are plenty of trucks that need a tune still so I think there is room for multiple tunes and a lot of tuners in outlying areas other than large cities. I would like to see some Youtube videos of Overland tune. They will all be an improvement over stock. Every 3rd gen owner needs a tune.

Disclosure: I am a KDMAX Pro Tuner

to sum up the important points about tunes

    1. Any solid tune is waaaaaaaaay better than stock.
    2. The differences between the most popular tunes is not really statistically significant.
    3. There are different tunes for different driving styles with all the major tunes. We are all different in how we use our trucks. Think back to when Chevy started because Ford said any color as long as it is black. He was too arrogant to paint it a different color.
    4. The best tunes add 10-15 hp max. This is all you can do with a normally aspirated engine. It’s pathetic compared to the 65 hp that we got when my wife’s VW Golf Alltrack was tuned. With 87 octane.
    5. there are reasons why there are different brands of products. Like Dewalt Makita Milwaukee. Just like there are different tunes. See #3 again.
    6. Knock off the bad mouthing tunes garbage. You get one and have a friend try another and figure out which one is best for YOU! Don’t tell me what’s best for me. I will figure that out. Unless you have blind tested them over the identical course you have no basis to comment on the other one. Just make your comments about the tune you are trying out. As W Edwards Demming says “In God we trust, all others bring data.”
    6. We ALL should be grateful for the different tuners since Toyota clearly does give a darn about how the trucks work in the real world. End of rant.

So, did you gather or reproduce all the data available for all the tunes, put them into a spreadsheet or database and run statistical analysis on it? Like a student T test or something to determine they are all within family?

JMP and Statistica are pretty good tools for that. I’d be happy to take a second look at your data for peer review.

I think you missed his point by a significant margin.

    Statistica told me that.

Maybe? I guess the engineer in me gets touchy when people say things are “not statistically significant” without data and quote Demming.

I think you meant to say that Toyota clearly does "not" give a darn about how the trucks work in the real world in # 6. They make that pretty obvious but they still sell a lot of trucks. When word gets out about the 3rd gen trans, and the small Ford trucks get better, they may have some competition.

The majority of the popular tunes have only been shown to others via a Dyno graph. That's only a very small sample of data, and only representative of WOT. For the average DD, or someone who wants to have a truck drive better, WOT runs mean absolutely nothing. I think he was going with the DD route over a Dyno graph, at least that's my take on his post.

Good DD and good dyno are not mutually exclusive last I checked. One is just qualitative (can be quantified but difficult) and one is quantitative.
