Anything welding

Doesn’t really seem like something to be proud of.

 

What? Me getting his cert pulled or him laying down an unacceptable weld?

 

Meh if you produce shit work you get taken off the job, plain and simple. I get sick of fixing others mistakes and them still having a job in my line of work, and my line of work is far easier to correct than welds on pipe.

 

Sometimes you have to do what needs to be done. But it’s an unfortunate thing when someone loses their job, no matter the reason. Getting someone thrown off the job isn’t something I’d personally go around bragging about whether it was necessary or not. But I get it, the dude was probably a real pain in the ass.

 

Granted we all have off days !!

But to not look and see that is down right bad and not do what ever company policy is as they can be somewhat different

When I was lead any of my crew could say I am just off it is just not working as long as that was not a Friday habit or way to often we would work around a bad day.

Some weld shops one just repairs others it goes into the rework pile etc.

Is a total lack of professional standards that were pounded into my head

 

Should make the night shift supervisor fix it. It’s their responsibility to make sure someone that unqualified isn’t screwing the pooch.

It’s not pride, it’s responsibility, or accountability if you prefer.

 

It’s common sense. If a reported a school bus driver for falling asleep drunk and blasting nasty music around kids I wouldn’t feel bad either, not that I ever did that once. Haha

 

If it was an off night I’d want to know why and whether it was a chronic issue. Not to excuse it but to get him some help and away from a torch until it’s resolved.

 

I am empathetic and generally have a lot of patience with people, but the second you put the teams safety or livelihood at risk that all goes to zero. If someone put this forward as complete, knowing it would be inspected, what are they doing when no one's looking?

 

I don't know how you could look at the other welds on that pipe, do that kind of work and call it good.

 

It seems like everyone is arguing a point that I wasn’t trying to make. I wasn’t debating whether the consequences were justified. Only pointing out that @allenfab seemed particularly joyous about needing to do it. Sometimes people deserve to be fired, etc, but we can still acknowledge the shittiness of the situation and not celebrate having to take drastic actions.

But either way, my comment got more attention than it deserved. I know nothing of the situation and probably shouldn’t have commented at all. For that, I do apologize.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Some things need attention both in terms of what was done and what the response was. Talking about it shouldn’t be taboo.

Agreed. Everyone has their off days, but work like this has become habitual

This is what ended up happening. When I confronted the nightshift supervisor about it directly, he just shrugged his shoulders and said "oh well". That's when I went further with having the issue addressed

It's a regular occurrence. When you don't have QC on night shift, just day shift, they do whatever they want and we pay the price on days

No worries. This industry can be pretty cutthroat at times, and some companies would have fired the guy on the spot. When work like this happens as often as it does at my job, and I am the one that has to fix the majority of it, you can only take so much of it before you crack. But since his cert getting pulled is going to save me, and others, countless hours a week doing repairs, I think I did a lot of people a favor.

 

This applies to my response as well, sorry for that. I wasn't trying to attack your response, just trying to add perspective. Seeing this kind of stuff just gets to me when I see it and I'm in a completely different industry.

Finally getting back to work on this project after an unrelated arm injury.

I decided I just really wanted to learn TIG for this one. Going to make the repair with some .050 stainless. Looks like I've got a long way to go with practice though :/



Just started practicing welding to the body sheet metal I cut out from the cracked body work. So far... I've learned to remove as much paint as I possibly can! What a stench!!!


Edit: Lol I just read the prior page. I'd be happy if I could weld as well as that night shift guy! In my defense, this is 100% of my tig experience all in one photo... and I'm not dumb enough to start welding on the truck until things look better in practice.

 

Anyone here familiar with Draftsight?

Yes I'm aware of many other software applications like Solidworks and more; just looking for a Draftsight user.
