I have been working (very slowly) cleaning out the family homestead where my mom lived 55 years, I find cards my grandmother sent me like that as a child.

It is more difficult than you would think to sort through someones things after all the years.

    I can't imagine what it's like.

Side note, my great aunt kept my birth announcement from 1975 and sent it to me when Cole was born 10 years ago. I thought that was cool she held onto it all those years. It's hard to believe my kids have a great, great aunt too.

Another side note I was a fat baby, looked like a sumo wrestler in the picture:rofl:

I need to find it and post the photo.

There are things in the house that haven't moved or boxes that haven't been opened in 40+ years -- amazing amounts of paperwork and records. :goingcrazy: My mom grew up during the Depression and was of the "pay cash and get a receipt" mindset.

It obviously isn't tiring physically but a couple of hours can really wash you out emotionally. It also goes so slowly, 2-3 hours work going through old papers and the like doesn't look like much progress.

As a family we are (were, they are all gone) a pretty stoic bunch and never sat around gabbing about days gone by. This is kind of like reading a mystery novel uncovering clues about the past. The gist of the story is the past was pretty damn tough...

No, those are in the garbage now.

Walking out to the kitchen to throw them away last night, the phrase "upon further inspection, I lost a tooth" was met with concerned looks from my wife and kid. Until they saw I was looking at the zipper.
