Any woodworkers?

I've got a ton of experience chainsaw milling. If I can be of any assistance ask away. I also did a pretty thorough thread on it over at woodbarter you might like to read through. I have a milling box like you as well. I call it my milling tacklebox.

 

Yup, it's maple.

Thank you.. seems the darker streaks inside have thrown a lot of people off.

a random question for anyone.. have you ever used apple wood in a wood working project?

 

I've only used it in turnings. Fruit woods are very difficult to dry without cracking and twisting.

 

Thank you for your input.. I adore using Cherry in my cutting boards and have access to apple but usually use that for food smoking.

 

What people don't understand is that there are many varieties of maple and equally as many colors other than just the light wood that most people associate with maple. Some of the browns and reds that appear are very beautiful. I like all maples, even soft maples, I won't turn any of it away. It's a joy to work with. Even the lowly box elder is a sub species of maple, even has very similar seeds.

 

I turned a couple pens in boxelder. Didnt know it was a maple

 

I'm not saying you can't dry it and use it as lumber, just expect some loss in the drying process. I just cut around defects like that.

 

I was pleasantly surprised when I flipped the cut over and saw what was inside.. If I can get it dried out properly I have a few ideas for that wood.. and access to a lot more wood. My current issue is storage and drying before I can work with it.

 

Flame box elder can be stunning. Especially if it's infested with ambrosia beetles.

This is why I haven't done any wood working for awhile. Been working on our new ebikes.
I did a lot of mods to mine.
Been riding it to work as much as possible with the gas prices.

Some parts are coming for this one.

They really are fun. Makes my commute more enjoyable. I peddle mine constantly to extend the battery range and also to get some excersize. I average between 15 and 20 mph peddaling. It'll do 30 with throttle only. Betty's is a little different, hers will only go to 29 mph on throttle only, but you can get to 30 if you peddle. She's still not used to hers taking off on her when she starts to peddle, lol. She'll get used to it and become more confident as she rides it more.

 

you are correct.. started building a wood drying kiln this past weekend.

Add a sharping tool of some sort to that
