around here it seems like all the big companies are suffering but all the lil businesses are doing very well.

people are getting smarter and providing their own materials and acting as generals now to cut into profits on the builders part

same here. and its helped weed out the shady contractors too...only the more reliable guys are thriving now. I think architects and engineers are suffering too...more people are trying to draw their own plans to save a buck :goingcrazy:

Good. And yes, more snow. Got to shovel the driveway at lunch :( but at least I'm prepared...wore my thermals to work today

i know around here we were getting pushed into using engineers for everything but we just recently found out that there really is no reason to use an engineer (for example with roof trusses, we were told to get engineered trusses because that way we cant get in trouble if something was to happen. we were just told that even if we have engineered trusses and a failure was to happen, the enginners are not resposible and we are. so my boss is no longer going to spend the extra money to have engineered trusses for our jobs, we are going to build everything ourselves. atleast that way if something fails we know it was our fault and not some pencil pusher :p

If you guys know what you're doing thats one thing I guess...I get to deal with people with no building experience designing 4000 sqft homes and putting no real thought into them.

The truss thing seems hinky. Everything here is prebuilt/preengineered by truss plants.

That's what I was wondering too...isn't still easier to have the trusses show up on site one day all ready to go? I know there is software out there to make the design of them fairly easy but still seems like a lot of extra work to do it on site.

Building your own trusses is a make work project .

Why not just cut down trees and make your own lumber too , or get some navvy jack and hand mix your own concrete ?

my boss i am beginning to learn is an idiot. the engineered trusses are nice for the speed. we can get an entire roof structure up and start sheeting it all in one day. my boss i very opinionated about everything and its nice to get other points of view on the situations :)
