I’ve read that the K&N air filters eventually cause more harm down the road. I opted to go with cheap OEM replacements as needed

I've never seen such a dirty MAF. Never had to clean either my 2004 or 2002 Chrysler. throughout the life of the vehicles..both of which I drove for 17+ years. Then again I change air filters every so often. I wonder if there was a leak around the air filter. I suggest you change the oil and re-examine the filter housing just to be safe.

I cleaned the entire air pathway inside and out and the new filter seals up tight. Only point of compromise was the foam seal at the fender but I don't think that would have caused it. I did replace that seal with weatherstripping.

I understand that you "read" it, but what do you think is the cause?

Go buy an OEM Toyota filter, they filter the best and are far superior to the KnN

Did you clean the 2 MAF sensors elements down inside the rectangular tube of the MAF sensor, or just the IAT (intake air temp) thermistor bulb shown in the photo? Many don’t know the difference, and unknowingly skip cleaning the actual MAF sensor elements.

I’ve found MAF sensors foul up pretty badly in heavy forest fire smoke too, and speaking of that, mine is probably due for a good cleaning after last years fires.

If I recall(read it many beers ago), the oil catches dirt quicker(as intended) which in turn restricts air flow quicker. The most common issue is people over-oiling them

From what I've read here on TW and other places, it is actually the fine particulate matter that K&N and other oil air filters suffer from. I ran a K&N on my Toyota pickup (loved the sound and additional snap) and was planning to run one on my Tacoma but decided against it after finding this issue repeated close to every forum I checked for stats on K&N filters.

That is pretty damn dirty. Great job cleaning it though!
