Is it just grinding when cold? I assume you’ve tried using synthetic GL4 transmission fluid?

Yes, I put 2 different kinds of trans fluid in and still no improvement. Only happens when it’s cold, or for the first several miles.

Had similar issues, with 2nd gear however, on the 2.7 5spd on cold mornings. 2nd would grind a little occasionally but consistently you’d have to apply a lot of force to put it in 2nd. The Ford XT-Q5-MS GL4 synthetic MT oil seems to have fixed my issues (knock on wood). It’s been a little warmer since I did the swap but cold mornings don’t seem to be a problem anymore, shifting is pretty smooth immediately.

After I did my MT 90 swap it took a while for everything to get settled. Haven’t had any issues since. Good luck.

I think bottom line is GL4 works better in 2nd Gen MT’s for most.

    DHRyder,
Did you find resolution with this. I’ve a 2000 I’m trying to nurse along and though a five speed thought same thing may apply. I can’t even get or keep it in 3rd but sounds like a retainer arm may be a first approach. If you there?
