That looks terrible, they don't wipe or clean excess? Is it completely dry or will it drip on hot days?

This is the old method..they sprayed a black coating on the outside, I'd guess inside as well but never looked.

can't see the coating too great here but it's all I have.

@VaGlock the method you get now is newer than the one I had so I can't speak to that; that said, if it's my truck I would get it done for the sake of having the extra guarantee on the frame.

I used to work at a dealership and my bays were across from the bay they did all of the coating. It may not look pretty, but it will extend the warranty (and the life of) your frame. So, the bigger question becomes, why wouldn't you do it? I had the frame done on my 2014 and I have no regrets.

I see your point, as far as the warranty extension that wont be a benefit for me if my truck has no rust after 8 years it surely should not have holes in the frame in another four years. I do plan on keeping this truck for a long time, so there may be a benifit.

Mine was “inspected” in 2016 or 2017.
The Dealership nor Toyota is going to do anything for me. I’m 2.5 years passed the warranty period. If I ever need to have mine repaired, I’ll just buy the caps and have someone weld them on

I don’t bother wasting time on battles I know I destine to loose.

For sure, rinsing the undercarriage is good practice for any vehicle.

But IMO there's no excuse for the subpar metallurgy Toyota used on these frames, not to mention they are paper thin on the first gens.

I mean, what's the maintenance schedule for preventing internal delamination of the steel from starting inside boxed sections? I know you mentioned a 360 degree flexible spray wand in several other threads, which is good advice, but that's a pretty niche solution that not many people would know about. After all, how many Taco owners are even on this forum?

Other trucks they made like the Hilux/Pickup and Land Cruiser seem to have much stronger frames with better rust prevention. Even the 3rd gen 4runner isn't as bad, so I know they can make a solid frame if they want to.

It really boggles the mind how they've let this issue persist in the Tacoma for so long, and I don't think it can all be attributed to lack of "frame maintenance" on the part of owners.

well if it’s any consolation to you I believe the campaign is either over or will be over in a few days so your decision has probably already been made for you.

Your frame looks brand spanking’ new anyway, just take care of it and it will stay that way.

I had my 2014 inspected late summer last year. Except for the surface rust on the welds, I didn't see anything ominous. They did the cleaning, CRC application and plugs and declared it good. The white CRC stuff stays in place. It doesn't seem to run in the hot weather. That said, I have to say that some of the pics posted on here recently are a real eye-opener: My truck has no where near the amount of CRC applied like some others shown here. I thought it was pretty sparse when I got home and looked it over under there. Compared, mine looks like they were running out of the stuff and had to conserve it. It's all in the same places, just a lot less of it. Needless to say, I'll be insisting on another inspection some time next year. In the mean time, it's Fluid Film every spring and fall and inspection once a year until 2026. These trucks cost too much money to just roll over and accept a problem that hasn't been resolved since the 1990's.

I worked with a guy that was one of the first owners to be offered a replacement under the early campaign. It was a while ago, but as I recall, he got either a: "Blue Book value plus "X" percent over" offer on a by-back or trade or original MSRP + "x" percent, AND dealer cost minus "X" percent on a trade on any new Toyota. This was before any frame replacement campaign was initiated. He bought a new Venza.

Similar to you, I dropped my truck off at 8am to the dealership in Kamloops, BC. They called me at noon saying it was done. Not sure how it was so quick. Seemed pretty minimal.

As I see it, it isn't going to harm anything. Mine wasn't as clean as yours when I got the first inspection but it was not rusty. Knowing the history between my wife's old Tacoma and others I was definitely doing it.

Similarly, I started working from home March 2020. Was hoping the minimal use on my truck might work in my favor to get a hole and therefore a reframe, which did happen. Fortunately no issues from the repair.

I know in the case of the first gen it wasn't found out until early 2008, my wife's 96 was bought back in April that year. I forget the story but I want to say it was believed that Dana was either using a different metal or a heat-treating process that would stop that, but even if so that means you still had 12 years worth of those trucks out there.

Yup, my wife got Kelly Blue Book excellent number (which everyone got no matter what) plus 50%. I want to say it was $1500-$1000 off a Toyota from a Toyota dealer depending if you went new or used respectively..I just remember there were different numbers for those 2 situations, as we bought a used Rav4.

I would confirm that with Toyota. I have a flyer that states the CRC campaign ends March 2022. I guess it varies by region.

Outside of my frame has rust spot where water got between welds viewable from the inside. So basically I am now questioning whether any of the welds that are every 3-4 inches (along the inside) are now still sound structurally.

My appointment is made for (Thurs.) 4/7/22, they will inspect and treat frame and will be ready to pick up on Sat. Loaner car provided. Just hope they don't make a mess of my frame.
