Solid Edge CAD - Making the Tacoma

I figured I will try and make a Tacoma one piece at a time with my spare time, instead of watching tv.. I'm getting to know the program right now.

Honestly, I'll be happy if I can even get a detailed tire.

EDIT- I'm going to do the sketches first, then I'll work on the CAD.

I like the last version of autodesk inventor forthat kind of stuff. The newest version is kind of a pain in the ass. What software are you using?

 

Good luck. You have a lot of work ahead of you lol. I work with AutoCad and I've tried drawing simple wheels a couple of times, when I would get bored, and can never get them to look like I want it to.

Just getting the treads on the tires to look good is going to be a pain, let alone an entire truck lol.

If you can get it to scale and pretty detailed I know some people that would buy a copy of the file.

i tried making a wheel last year in autocad and a bumper in inventor, it was a little hard considering i forgot how to use it haha, but good luck man! itll definitely be cool to see what you get

 

I've practiced using Solidworks during my senior year in high school, but the University only has Solid Edge V16.

 

Most of the mechanical parts should be easy, but anything cosmetic is gonna tear you up. Good luck though.

 

WHY ARE YOU USING V16? st3 comes out this summer and there are cheap versions of st2 for students (I get it for free from my school). P.S. Have fun with all those lofts and sweeps when doing the body. Solid edge isn't the best software around when it comes to stability. I prefer solidworks hands down.

P.S. Your computer is going to shit itself unless you suppress absolutely everything when doing the assembly. Even then, its probably going to shit itself haha.

Can you import solid model files from other programs such as inventor into the program you are using?

 

can inventor make iges or step files?

 

Yep, I do it everyday to import models into CF design.

 

Solidedge supports importation of iges and step files. However, what you can do with the imported part is fairly limited.

and I take it you are a mechanical engineer?

 

I use AutoCAD 2010 all day doing Civil Drafting. But I love to use SolidWorks. Like someone else said, doing the mechanical stuff should be pretty straight forward, but the freeform curves of the body are a nightmare. I don't think they actually model the body in CAD software. I think they use the clay models and use laser scanners to input. Would make a great "how its made".

yeah im doing mechanical here. Yeah, essentially it could be used as a "volume" model.

 

That's all they have here... We'll see what happens, don't forget it's practically my first time so I'm pretty much looking for all of the tools I'll need to successfully do this.
EDIT- I'm working in the computer lab since I live on campus and it's open the whole day if you guys didn't know.

I'll probably have to sketch all of this out first(very detailed), then I'll get it on the CAD software. I'm probably going to look like a 'tard measuring around the truck haha.
