update on the suntour upgrade program.

sent them a screen shot of my bike order from 2015 that i got from promotive (now expertvoice) and a picture of the serial on my fork. they sent my a discount code about 2 days later (yesterday). placed the order for the epixon just now. $325 for the fork plus ups ground priority shipping so hopefully i get it by wednesday next week. just in time for my race next saturday.

my headset should be fine, but i need a race or something too?

 

What headset is in there?

Some crown races are press fit and some are slip fit, if it’s slip fit you might be able to see the race where the fork meets the headset/frame and it will either be plastic or a slit in it.

 

Good ride today at Bobcat Ridge. A nice 70° but with some 20-30mph winds. Pretty tough going in the lower valley, but once I climbed up and into the charred timber [from last years fire] there was some good wind breaks. Not many out with the trails to myself and near perfect dirt from the snow melt and just dried out enough as to not leave tread marks behind, hence hero dirt.

 

Anyone have any experience with the Troy Lee Design A3 helmets?

I’ve gotten into bike packing a little bit, but don’t know many people out my way that are interested in camping and having to bring all your gear with you on your bike.

 

You should be able to swap the race between the forks. It sits on the fork, where your steerer meets the crown. A LBS will do it in seconds and probably not charge you, but you should bring a sixer for good trail karma.

Yes. I've run a lot of helmets, the A3 fits me best. As you've probably heard, the best helmet is the one that fits you best. I'd add in that's it's the one that fits you best, adds in the tech you're after, and you like the look of.
Check in with Virginia Tech helmet safety reviews, pick a few you like (tech and looks-wise), and go try on as many as possible. When you find the right fit, you'll know.

 

I swapped my forks and was able to reuse mine. I watched the GMBN Tech YouTube video on swapping forks and it was helpful. Mine was not split so I had to carefully remove it using a small screw driver and I set it on the new fork using a PVC pipe

 

Bought a gravel bike with the intent of bike packing in the future - but mainly using it for a mix of pavement and fire/gravel roads at the moment. Fun way to get some decent mileage!

 

Looking at options for carrying my bike(s) in the bed of the truck and have a few wants in a decent solution:
-No frame contact
-Do not want to remove a wheel
-Sturdy

I keep coming back to the Thule Insta-Gater Pro, but it seems like a hefty price tag for one bike ($279). I fully understand in cycling and life, the old saying goes 'buy nice or buy twice', but maybe I am missing an obvious solution? I currently have a Yakima tailgate pad and while it works, I am always worried when backing up with the camper I will crunch the front tire, and the pad has rubbed away the paint on the down tube contact point (not to mention concerns over marring truck paint with the pad).

Then to counter my concern over price point, two of those Thule racks would be very similar to the cost of a good hitch mount rack to hold two bikes.

 

If you want to go low brow, check out some of the standing bike options people have made from 1" PVC. No frame contact is tough, the PVC options I think would require some way to stabilize the bike. I ruled out the insta-gater because of the bed mat I was running (it has a flap that covers the gap between the bed and the tail gate).

Same. I went for a quick overnighter with some buds two nights ago.

 

I've looked at the PVC bike racks, but not a big fan of the stability, also having an XL bike, I would most likely need to twist the handlebar to get it all to fit and close the tailgate.

ive been on a few overnights with some bikes.

 

Had and A3 and replaced it with a Fox Speedframe. A3 is a nice helmet but I've got a goofy melon with weird pressure spots.
