Ah, I hadn't considered that but I'll have to give it a shot.I do have storm window retrofits but they're also very old single pane windows that don't seal lol. I've tried the plastic sheeting but it doesn't do too well. It keeps falling off.

I was sitting here thinking I was developing circulation issues because my right hand will freeeeze and on a particularly windy day I could actually feel the draft rolling across my desk

When are your windows from? Mine are all double pane from the mid 90s, nothing great, but at least they aren't fogging yet so they've got life left.

 

Nah, in WA you have to be a licensed gas fitter to do that stuff, guess I could put it all in and have someone come do the gas, but for the price quoted it makes more sense to let em at it and not have to lift anything.

 

our windows are old as shit, too. Probably as old as the house (1926). One issue with them is they don't seal well at all being those old Craftsman style latch windows, so I've had some luck using those foam inserts to fill in the gaps. Keeps bugs out too.

but yeah the thin glass doesn't help with energy saving at all

 

When we had that windstorm a few months back (60+mph gusts), you could see our curtains blowing in the house even though all the windows were shut lol.

ours are all the old kind that swing inward like a door. With no seal of any kind so when closed you can feel temperature of the outside air around it.

Not that it gets super cold here but it sucks in summer when its crazy hot and the AC has to be pumping constantly just to maintain 80 degrees lol

The dust intrusion is not great either. I suppose it helps with radon though LOL

 

I'm afraid to spend the $1000+ for a radon system only to find out i have a lot of it haha

Nah, can't buy anything around here if youre not making an immediate cash offer, anything with contingencies like an inspection or whatnot is ignored

 

So the mystery of why our water heater keeps randomly going off was solved. We keep our vacuum cleaner parked next to it and the plumber takes one look and goes "do you vacuum around the water heater?"....yeah..."you're sucking out the pilot light"

I was gonna diy a radon system install but it's probably worth paying for

apparently if the level is high enough it's equivalent to poking several packs a day

 

That's a danger with the whole house fan, if I don't open an appropriately sized window or door... it'll suck the fucker right out

Yea we tried the plastic as well.. the drafts were so bad it made the windows look like they were breathing every time a car drove past or the slightest breeze kicked up

It was kinda expensive (I think 350 for 8 large windows) but I went with .090 thickness plexi. It's paid for itself in 2 winters with savings on heat bill. We have electric baseboard heat
