I plan on going to the beach for the first time... Do I need off road tires?

Not necessarily. Just air down to about 20 psi.

Tread pattern is not as important as air pressure on sand. Make sure to air down, and have some way to air back up when you get back on the roads.

Also…………100% bring a tow strap or recovery strap. Don’t end up on the news.

Just go ahead and do your research and find the tide schedule for wherever you're going. You may feel like you're confident at not getting stuck, but IF you did, allow yourself enough time realistically to coordinate a recovery before you're truck is underwater

Oh, and schedule an extra day at the end of your trip to detail the crap out of the underside of your vehicle. You don't want those elements around longer than they have to be.

    Beach driving is easy.

    • Stay off the dunes. That's illegal at most beaches anyway.
    • If it looks loose, air down. Bring a compressor to air back up
    • Watch the tides. Stay well out of the surf line.(wet sand is a no no)
    • If the truck starts to dig more down than forward, stop. It isn't mud, don't try to power throttle through.
    • No donuts. Not only is that illegal, it's also a dick move.
    • Use a yeti tumbler to drink your beverages. Beach patrol is always very interested in what's in your hand.

you will be fine, i have no problems even with highway all seasons, airing down definitely helps but that's honestly not necessary n my opinion.

starting again from a full stop in the soft or going too fast on the mush is usually my issue, totally fine in the hard pack though. Bring a shovel and a couple boards for peace of mind if you wish, stay out of the deep ruts and keep your eyes on the sand. An errant hole dug by some kid can ruin your day easily.

and like previous posters stated, keep and eye on the tides, you dont want to get cut off.

Its loads of fun and possibly the best way you can spend the day - be prepared to lose track of time, enjoy yourself immensely, and be the only one left awake on the drive home as everyone else passes out after a day in the sun and wind.

To me, there is nothing better then a day on the beach in a Tacoma

You already have what can be considered “off road” tires. A step above all terrain tires is mud terrain tires, but I doubt you need those.

    All of this!

If you do spin your tires and need recovered, be sure your front wheels are pointed straight ahead (not turned). Huge effect in helping to get unstuck.
As is backing up just a bit (6"-1') before going forward.

Air pressure is key.. This is my LOWERED Subaru back in 2013. Only got stuck once.. on snow tires.

Just remember your air pressure is low and drive accordingly..

You've got an Off Road, you'll be fine. Use the rear Locker & possibly the Crawl Control...

Crawl control will not be particularly useful on the beach I don’t think. Multi-terrain select might be useful though.

That’s a common misconception. Crawl control is basically an off road cruise control to be used when crossing obstacles or ascending/descending steep slopes.

Multi-Terrain Select on the other hand is basically a simulated front and rear locker. It is also true that crawl control has much (all?) of the functionality of multi-terrain select.

Crawl Control is reported to not work well on level surfaces. There are a few threads on the subject.

Disclaimer: I have a manual transmission, so I have ATRAC.
