The Dreaded Throwout bearing chirp

Well, Ive figured out the source of the chirping coming from my Dads 2008 DCSB V6. Throwout bearing chirp. It goes away when the clutch is engaged. It has 3 new idler pulleys, a new belt, and a new bearing in the tensioner pulley so that rules out the front of the engine. After much research Ive determined that the symptoms match the throwout bearing TSB. I understand the URD sleeve kit is the way to go here. Truck has 115k on it. Anything else that should be replaced? I guess my most important question here is, how long should I let this go? It started a few weeks ago. Still very faint but its there. Its still under a powertrain warranty until next August. Hopefully I can get the dealer to cover labor under the warranty and I'll just get them to install the URD kit.

Check out this recent thread, should answer your questions. It's annoying but let it be. Do the slave cylinder rebuild if your noise is still faint, should buy you a bit of noise-free time

 

Thought I would share my experience with the Throw Out Bearing squeal on this forum.

I have a 2007 4.0 6 Speed Tacoma.

I got a shop to replace my OEM clutch with a LUK clutch, after a couple days of driving I noticed a metallic chirp sound any time I engaged or disengaged the clutch. Shortly after I noticed a squealing sound coming from around the bell housing area.

When I went back to the shop who replaced the clutch, they said it could just be a faulty throw out bearing that was put in, so they once again put in a brand new thowout bearing. This only got rid of the noise temporarily, the squeal and chirp came back. I decided to look online and found many threads about this seemingly common issue with these 6 Speed transmissions.

While I spent months reading online, trying to find a solution to this problem, the noise continued to get worse and worse. The options I found to try and solve the issue were either:

- Clutch Masters Hydraulic Release Bearing
- URD Throw Out Bearing Sleeve Kit
- Toyota TSB "Fix"

After reading about people's experiences with the CM Hydraulic Release Bearing (Loss of fluid, inconsistent pedal feel)

I decided against that option because of the mentioned unreliability of the product.

I finally decided to go with a combination of the URD Throw Out Bearing Sleeve Kit and the Toyota TSB.

I had a shop install the URD Kit, while also replacing the original Slave Cylinder and Fork Support that came with my truck with the updated TSB parts.

So far (drive from the shop to my house), there has been no squeal or chirp. I will periodically post updates on whether or not my truck remains squeal and chirp free.

 

@Alexander20 How is the URD sleeve kit and TSB "fix" 9 months later?

 

Roughly 8-10,000 km of driving on it, no noise or clutch issues have returned so far.

 

@Alexander20 Thank you for the response! I did the TSB when I first got the truck, twice. Now she's screaming! Sleeve, and 3rd time's a charm! So it is!

 

Please keep us updated here on the long-term performance at least once or twice a year if you can...

I just bought the URD TOB / sleeve kit & it will sit on the shelf for possibly months to years until I want or need to do a clutch job on my young (63K miles) 2014 4.0L 4WD 6-MT.

 

Still haven't had any noise return. Coming up on a year with the Sleeve kit and TSB update combo

 

About how many miles a year do you drive on average? Do you just daily-drive it or do you also haul/tow and/or go offroad much?

 

I ended up doing the whole toyota fix, slave cylinder, new fork, TOB, clutch, and PP. 10k miles later still no noise fingers crossed

 

By "TOB", do you mean the URD throw-out-bearing + sleeve kit, yes?

 

No the original toyota throw out bearing is what I used if it starts acting up I will try the URD

 

Phew. I'm glad I asked. Yes, according to a youtube I watched (can't find the link, now) the Toyota original throwout bearing has a design flaw which will cause it to fail / squeak much sooner than it should. Whereas the URD TOB/sleeve kit is re-engineered to eliminate the root cause of the problem & hopefully last ?? 3x or more longer.

 

Man sometimes I regret buying the 6 speed lol. Hopefully this "fix" last for me

 

Roughly 12-15,000 km per year. Mostly daily driving, but occasional light-moderate off road/wheeling in the summer and fall

 

Are the manual transmissions from 12-15 fixed of this issue?

 

Are you able to update wether the noise cam back or not? Been about year from this post

the throwout bearing is problematic. That is not in the transmission. TOBs go onto transmissions.

they did not fix this. Nor on 16-23.
