Cloning 2 sets of TPMS sensors

Hello all, I didn't some digging on the forums and there really isn't much on cloning tpms sensors. With that being said. Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to if it's possible to clone a set of OEM steel sensors with alloy tpms sensors? If so can you provide links? TIA.

 

I have three sets of wheels for my 2017 Tacoma. One set is the OEM sensors in TRD OR alloys. For the second and third set of wheels I have installed 8 Autel MX 315 cloneable sensors and I have uploaded the OEM sensor ID numbers using my Autel TS601 to each sensor (I got the 601 since I did not have a OBDII tool). Since the truck only sees the same four ID numbers, there is no programming the PCM/ECU. Swap wheels in a few minutes put the others away and follow the OM for the TPMS button by my knee and done.

 

I just got 4 Autel MX cloneable sensors today and the scanner should be here tomorrow. I'll be doing the same as eurowner and cloning my factory sensors to run different tires/wheels . Looks to be pretty straight forward after a little research

 

I must say this is very smart, definatly something to remember for the future.

 

A couple of related questions you guys might be able to help with.

• Is it possible to install 5 of these sensors in 5 wheels if one wanted to cycle the spare in with tire rotations?
• If I sold my OEM wheels with the OEM sensors in them, is it possible to use that Autel tool to retrieve the codes from the ECU for programming new sensors?

 

I can answer your first question, someone will have to answer your 2nd.

No, you cannot add a 5th sensor. Some Toyota vehicles allow it, the Tacoma isn't one, unfortunately.

 

+1, I just did this same setup on a set of dedicated snow tires for my truck. I did the Ts508 tool to program.

The 3rd Gen PCM/ECU can only see 4 sensors. There have been reports here when there is a 5th wheel with sensor which causes the TPMS to “crash”.

Yes, Techstreams shows a window which only works for vehicles that have a PCM/ECU that is designed to see 5 sensors, a’la the Landcruiser and specific years for the 2nd Gen Tacoma.


Yes, but you are not looking at the PCM/ECU with the hand held Autel tool! You wave the Autel tool on the wheel at the valve to scan the old sensors, write the IDs down/take a picture of the screen, and then you can manual input those IDs into your new cloneable sensors.

 

How do I map the sensors if I don’t have the originals? The light drives me up a wall

Meant program. There are none at the moment. Need to pick up a set. But I’ve held off until I can figure out what Are the easiest to program without having the original to clone

 

gotcha i was curious if i was able to clone the steel sensor with alloy but was unaware they were different frequencies and they sit at a different angle? looks like ill be in on the FSC buy for another alloy set.

 

Pretty sure the Autel sensors will work as they are basically universal as long as they are cloneable ones. They also cover 315/433 frequencies in one sensor.

I’m sure you can get the codes out of the ecu somehow as even tho the sensors are gone the info should still be there.
As long as your TPMS tool has OBD capability I don’t see why you couldn’t read the ECM

You can clone the sensors by inputting the info manually from a scanner, so if you have the old IDs you don’t need the old sensors.

 

Tacomas used to have sensors in the spares, ended around mid production of the '09 model IIRC.

So, someone who has an earlier vehicle should have this option.

The 508 has OBD capability for the TPM system and comes with a cable. You should be able to program new ifs into the ecu with this one. The 408 has no cable it’s a wireless unit for basically just learning and programming sensors themselves. Not sure where you are in NH but I’m in S.Maine right across the river and I have the
