FOUND: My truck was stolen last night- Fxck!

AirTag has been great. I stuffed one in a ZipLoc and put it in my passenger-side bed cubby. I don't think its ever gone more than 30 minutes before someone with an iPhone strolls by and I get an accurate FindMy hit. Haven't bothered to pop the speaker out, but will probably do that when the battery needs replacing.

And if you were that thief and couldn't find the AirTag, in a minute or two, what would you do?

 

I guess that would depend on why I wanted the truck. My iPhone (the thief) is going to keep transmitting the tag’s location back to the owner’s iPhone. @Da Voke said in post #212 that the thugs will park it hidden for a while till the heat’s off, so if the tag is still active there’d be a chance of seeing it’s last location from the thug’s iPhone.

Not much else to say if they just want to steal your truck for laughs. They might set fire to it.

Yes, they could. And then you get a new truck. PROVIDED that you had the foresight to add new vehicle replacement cost to your auto insurance, otherwise you will have to kick in a little money out of your pocket. But with what these trucks are commanding these days it wouldn't be a lot of money out of your pocket because our depreciation is so small. What about replacing all the mods and upgrades you will ask? The smart man insures those too under additional equipment coverage.

Provided you planned ahead and did these things, I would prefer they burn it over other possible outcomes.

 

Yeah. There are two levels of anti-stalker protections built into it. The first one is that it'll emit a sound if it hasn't seen the iPhone it is paired with for a while. The second level is that IF you have an iPhone AND an AirTag NOT paired with it seems to be traveling with you, you'll get a notification on your iPhone.

Speaker one is easy to defeat. No way around the 2nd. Not too worried about either. I'll bet I notice that my Taco is missing before they find the AirTag For me, it's just essentially a dirt-cheap backup to the truck's GPS.

 

Yes … and Apple also knows precisely which iPhone is reporting the nearby AirTag. If the truck is stolen, the PoPo simply asks Apple for ALL the data they have about whoever the iPhone that is allegedly being tracked.

Well, my recently purchased steering wheel club seems to be useless after watching the video below. I know if they really want my vehicle they will take it despite the club. As a deterrent, I just hope they move on. However, In the video, the first thing the thieves remove is the Club. Also, one of the surveillance clips you see what looks like a Tundra easily being stolen from in front of a house.

Amazing how fast your brand new vehicle can be stolen these days as witnessed in the demo shown in the video.

Shit! Great video but, really depressing. I disable my key fob and use a club and still every morning as long as I'm in this apartment I expect to wake up and find it gone. I'll feel better when we move out and into our home. At least I didn't see any videos of them taking a vehicle from INSIDE a home garage.

 

All I can do is the same thing. Disable the FOB and use the club and hope they move on. As per the video, Seems that the OBD port is now the biggest liability on new vehicles.
Yes, The manufactures need to definitely step up and look at improving the current level of theft prevention. Other than that keep your insurance up to date. Very frustrating if you poured you heart into your truck as a custom project and it gets stolen. What a hassle.

 

You know, it seems like I can't do anything anymore without "two step verification" where the provider sends a text number/security code to my phone to permit access. So how about Toyota provides for... anytime anyone plugs a reader into OBD port, whether at dealer service or from outside service provider or from owner's own device the Toyota app sends a text for a pin number. You provide it for whomever at the time or, call police?

 

But did he get convicted?

 

I would think they would require a witness unless there was a confession or video? I would certainly not confess. And, I wouldn't break their legs in front of witnesses either.

 

Maybe a pin required before any attempted change to ECU parameters?

Admitting I've not read through the whole thread yet, sure would be nice to get a group buy on these port locks. They look to be well built and better than the plastic garbage I've seen elsewhere.

Looks good in principle. And I'm not beating you up over this.Maybe if the port were under the hood?

I don't know how much they are but, damn. What a pain in the ass: even after the trouble to install it, you have to keep up with both the key and an allen wrench. Also, I MAY have my truck stolen but, I will DEFINITELY have to take it in for service. And every time I will have to retrieve key and wrench, and either crawl my big, old ass under the dash, insert key, remove screws, and remove lock for any OBD access or at best, give that crap to service tech and expect them to do this? I think it's impractical for anything less than a rare or high value car. Not my very nice truck.

 

Don't buy it! As soon as they get back with me to confirm the correct part number for a Tacoma I'm ordering one. Much about life is a pain in the ass. Nothing worth doing is easy.
