Big Oil must be making up for lost profits when significant portions of the commuting population began to work from home during Covid.

It's not quite that simple. A drop in supply from Russia affects the global oil market and raises the price of a barrel of crude oil all over the world. You can't look at this from a US-centric point of view. This is a world market. A year ago a barrel of brent crude went for $63.77. On 3/8/22 it hit a high of $133.77, and has since backed off to $122.29 on 3/21. That's where your friendly neighborhood oil refineries that deliver oil to your gas stations are buying their crude in addition to domestic drilling. As you can see, their cost for crude has basically doubled in the past year.

As to the no drilling part, while it is shitty for us it makes sense for them. Corporate officers have an obligation to maximize their stockholders' return. They can be removed and even sued by the shareholders if they don't meet that obligations. I think sometimes we forget that corporations are not charities. They exist to make money for their shareholders, so if they are busting at the seams with money that's not a bad thing, it means they've done their jobs. Hopefully they will share some of that with the employees who made it possible.

Well, so much for heading back to the office.

Going to be hard to pressure people to head back in when gas is hovering around $5 / gallon and we’ve been remote for the last 2 years.

Sadly, this really hurts the folks who don’t have any options and have to commute in, like teachers, retail employees, restaurant workers, etc.

and all the people that complain about oil companies need to check the funds in their 401k plans and see they are benefiting too.

It’s kinda ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ though. Who cares if you have more and more savings when the money is more and more worthless?

If that's the case then you need to take a good look at your investment portfolio. The idea is your rate of return needs to outpace the rate of inflation. If the rate of inflation is, say, 3% but your return on your portfolio is 5%, then it's true value has increased by 2% adjusted for inflation. It's not "more and more worthless" unless all you do is stick your money in bank accounts that pay next to nothing. Since 1990 both US stocks and long term bonds have well outperformed the rate of inflation. Also, a portfolio that invests in those companies people are complaining about also benefits from those companies' success because the stock in your portfolio increases in value. You have to look at retirement investing from a long term perspective. Sure, you can have short term decreases in value at times like this, but over the long term it will grow if you have the right investment mix.

Price of e85 is about 50% cheaper here in Los Angeles area. Maybe I should get an e85 tune . Does anyone make an e85 tune for our 3rd gens?
