What rubbing on 33's? I want to get to 285/70/17 from stock, with 2inch lift

    Ok, I have been doing Tire/Wheel research for the better part of a month and while I have learned quite a bit about what the numbers mean, I still have no idea what rubbing I will get with 33's. So I currently have stock wheels/tires at 265/70/16. I am looking to get up to 33's, with a bit wider tire as well. I was thinking of getting 285/70/17 which would put me where I want to be. My question/concern is the rubbing of the tire, now I do have the front lifted 2inches. I would prefer not to cut the front bumper because I am planning on getting a new bumper and selling the OEM one. The new bumper has much more clearance so its extremely unlikely it will rub. Has anyone gone to this size before with a 2 inch lift and if so what issues were had. I am assuming I will need a -12mm offset rim or maybe -18 as I do want the tires to stick out just a hair past to give it a more aggressive look. Any help would be appreciated! Also feel free to post pics of your rims/tires with sizes 285/70/17!

    - ICON UCAs, BP51/Kings, SCS wheels, 285s, Leer 100XR canopy. Greenlane aluminum winch bumper, Smittybilt X20 winch. Trying Falken AT3w now, Really like BF KO2s.
    Aftermarket UCAs like spc will help you fit a 285. I have Icon UCAs and like them. Going to a good offroad shop for your wheel alignment is helpful as well. You can get the cmc done at the same place, around an hours Labor and you won’t even know it’s been done if they are good welders.
    its pretty easy to fit 285s and it looks great. I stuck with a C load 285 around 51lbs, mpg is still good.
    0, -10 or -12 wheels work with minimal cutting and trimming. -30 take more work.

    I thought that a negative offset will make it have less cutting though? And I assume the aftermarket UCA's are more about a smaller size/caster difference that helps them clear more?

    A negative offset like a -10 or a 0 offset gets the tire away from the uca so you don’t rub on it. 0 is kind of the sweet spot with 285s, they fit easier with minimal rubbing in the wheelwell.
    If you go with a higher negative offset like -30 you have to trim more. The stock tire/wheel are designed to turn within the wheel well. When you move it really far out past the fender it’s not in the wheelwell so you have to start cutting to make it fit. 0 or -10 offset the tire is mostly in the wheelwell area making fitting them easier.
    An aftermarket uca like spc makes it easier to move the tire around in the wheel well to minimize rubbing and get a good alignment after lifting.

    The higher negative offset causes the OUTER edge of the tire to contact the rear portion of the fender well near or at the cab mount when the tires are turned. I found a random pic showing it, not a Tacoma but a relevant example of the geometry problem.

    So if that rim had MORE negative offset (stuck out further), that outer edge of the tire would bind with the wheel well even more.

    I have 295/75/16 tires with FJ wheels, 1.25” spacers, cmc and spc uppers but it wasn’t until I got my front bumper that there was no more rubbing. I had to keep trimming more and more of the front fender liner. Bumper should straighten you out.

    So I just did a 2.25 in front lift 2 in rear lift on a 22' TRD OR SB with 17x8.5 zero offset 285/70/17 Toyo ATIII's. No UCA's as they're not needed at that lift height and I have very minor plastic rubbing in reverse that I'll simply move/heat to address when it gets warmer out. I haven't wheeled it yet so not sure on cab mount but from what it looks like If it does rub it will be minimal.

    I have a -12 offset and that problem displayed in the photo is exactly what happens to me with 265/75/16s on a two inch lift.

    So I'm approaching a similar situation myself. I ordered a set of 5 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks AT3s and am looking to buy wheels and I'm shooting for a -12 offset.
    I already have a Westcott Designs 3" front 2" rear preload collar lift that will go on the '22 TRD OR. I also have a C4 Fabrication bumper going on so rubbing in the front is a non issue. (Truck is under a week old)
    My question is, will SPC UCAs help minimize the need for cutting or trimming or am I pretty much destined for a CMC?

    You will need to slightly trim the inner fender plastic and most likely some of the front bumper. Really nothing you can do to avoid it if you want to fit 33s.

    You can easily fit those tires with SPCs in the F or G setting and maxing LCA bolts. I have stock UCAs and have 1/4" clearance at the cab mount. Static UCAs will not clear without chopping and cutting.

    Getting aftermarket UCAs will make life a lot easier…it’s just smarter when running any lift and wider/taller tires. Plus some come with zercs for easy lubrication.

    seems like there is some mystery prize if you you stay stock…? If you are going to lift and mod out your front suspension components beyond anything, except looks and roaming the boulevard…why pinch pennies where it matters?
