ECGS bushing install failure

When I did mind the tool did chip the inner edge of the stock bearing and the pieces were caught in the plastic bag stuffed in. My problem was with the threads of the tool. I could not get the "bolt" started and had to remove the tool-inner piece and start the bolt several times to clear up the bad threads. So start the the bold and make sure the threads are clear before inserting.

Looking to do this in the near future once I find the tools someone else no longer needs. I lifted it about 2 years ago and recently (past 6 months or so) have been getting a vibration. Is it possible this is the cause or would vibrations be instant after lift install?

 

Some people get the vibes right away, others over time. The bearing can also fail over time without a lift. Are you sure it’s vibes from the diff and not the driveshaft? If from the diff you will feel it through the driver’s floorboard as a sensation like going over a mild rumble strip, it could be constant or it could be cyclic.

 

Almost feels like driveshaft. Seems like it is in the center of the truck. It isn’t constant. Doesn’t really matter the gear I’m in (standard) it’s more about the rpm’s. If I’m accelerating nothing but if I let all the way iff it is noticeable and if I just feather the throttle it’s there but just a little more and it goes away.

 

In that case sounds like you need to investigate shims or a carrier bearing spacer. Others on the site can give you advice which would more likely help.

Mine came apart like that around 45k. Put the ECGS bushing in, and havent had any trouble since. However, my steering wheel has ALWAYS had a shimmy between 55-72mph. No matter what i change. Steering rag joint, tie rods, wheels, tires, wheel bearings, full suspension rebuild with all new arms, the shimmy has never gone away. So hopefully that bushing never fails

 

Holy rollers…so what’s the story? How bad was the vibe and how shredded was the bearing before you removed it? Hope you got all the pieces out…

 

I have done this a few times with different tools each time. One thing is constant, the ECGS removal tool, is not perfect. I had to grind down the corners on the one I have now because it absolutely would not fit in the diff and past the needle bearing to land straight on the back side of the old needle bearing. But it all worked out and we got the job done on @Minimag95 truck

 

I used a blind hole puller and the legs shifted causing the back of the bearing to break and the puller to get stuck Crooked. Then Used a pipe instead of the pulling legs and it came out easy. Got all the pieces out with a magnet. Install went well. I was replacing the CVs and decided to go for the bushing too, vibes were not bothersome. Bearing appeared ok before removal.

Niw i just got to figure out why my 4x4 wont work. The ADD actuator was ok so im thinking its the transfer case actuator...

 

Honestly wonder why toyota used that fragile little bearing in that situation. Other diffs with needle bearing have much stouter housings.

 

I have gotten so much crap from people on the forum about the tool not fitting, and what I’ve concluded is many people receive a tool to use that someone else already altered to fit, or there are manufacturing variations where some tools work as is and some require modification. So some people think only an idiot wouldn’t be able to get the tool to fit.

Not having a grinder, I elected to complete the rest of the suspension mod and actually took the truck to ECGS both to return the tool and have them do the job. Was about a wash and I got to meet their people who were great. And got a t-shirt.

I understand how it is when you set out to do something that seems super straight forward and nothing goes right.

As far as East Coast Gear Supply, I am a customer for life. I had a factory diff failure due to a shoddy repair shop over tightening my pinion nut and blowing the pinion bearing out. So I ordered a solid spacer custom built third from ECGS. It worked great and the swap wasnt too hard at all. Fast forward to 4 years and 10 months later, the pinion bearing failed AGAIN, completely at random. Sent it to them and they said, “yep, its bad and we dont know why so we’re covering it under our 5 year warranty.” Well, i couldnt get a factory LSD anymore so I opted to go for the detroit trutrac worm gear mechanical LSD at my own cost. Fast forward again…the order it didnt get done for 8-9 days and i contacted them an complained since i was told warranty work was rush order and took priority, so they completely waved all fees of the parts i selected and got the diff to me 3 days later. Saved me over $500. ECGS is pretty solid, I understand shit happens and orders get misplaced but they definitely did me right in the end

 

Oh wasn’t directed at you at all, what you said only reinforces my point that the tool often has to be modified, but those that got lucky and didn’t have to modify it don’t seem to recognize that it might be necessary for others. You’re all good! I’m glad you got it installed.

 

No worries. Its weird that the tool I used for mine, didnt have to be modified but then when I did Nile’s truck, we used a different tool and it had to be ground way down. So it must be a hit or miss kinda thing

 

Mine was tight.
I probably needed to modify it a bit.
But that race is brittle. I didn’t even have to hit the tool hard to breaks the race.

The outer edge of mine shattered a chunk off and the magnetic drain plug caught it, and held onto it for probably 25k until i did the next fluid change and found it

 

This is why you MUST buy the removal tools available from ECGS. Most if not all of the people I've seen here using general pullers end up destroying this bearing and making life much harder.
