Anybody have one of these on your rig?

I bought the metal to replace my plastic filter can and naturally Amazon adds suggestions and one of them being a magnetic oil drain plug. Thought about it to keep an eye on things as it’s easy for one to check that often.

It's not really necessary but it certainly won't hurt anything. If it gives you a little piece of mind then go for it.

make sure you get those expensive ones. You don't want the magnet to lose magnetism during working temperature and then release a batch of heavily concentrated ferrous particles.

No do not use a magnetic engine oil drain plug.

If you do inatal one the small particulate that is normally removed by the engine oil filter won't get caught in the filter during normal function and will instead clump onto the drain plug magnet until it can no longer hold the clumps, when that happens a larger mass can dislodge from it and jam your oil pump causing acute engine instant disassembly.

    Is that being dramatic?

    Yes.

But that's why Toyota doesn't have one.

Why do the transfer case and diffs have a magnetic drain plug then?

They don't have a pump or filter and they have significantly larger tolerances than an engine.

    But YMMV.

I doubt that’s ever happened in the history of the world lol

If you have that many ferrous particles somethings already trashed in your engine. o_O

We always put those rare earth magnets on the oil filters since we tossed those filters every oil change. Not sure how the filter cans would accommodate that in the Toyota though.

Not getting any from the ol' wife lately huh?

Obviously I was referring to non-Toyota truck oil changes that me and friends and family members did when WE changed our cars' oil. Good grief.

Not to mention, a clump that large would either:
    1. Be caught by the screen on the pump pickup, or...
    2. Be so heavy it just sits on the bottom of the oil pan.

Aw shit, I'm getting involved again.:annoyed:

You ever seen an engine oil change when the filter has been in full bypass for a while?

The microscopic metal particulate *is* there but that's why the filter is there also.

But you also kinda further my point, thanks to said filter there's, generally, not enough metal to bother with a magnetic drain plug.

If you've never pulled your diff or transfer case plug do so and report back to how fuzzy it is, then consider that there's a *LOT* more moving parts in an engine.

    :notsure:
