Hey and thanks in advance. I put on a new exhaust on my Tacoma today and noticed the factory exhaust has a shield to keep the spare safe. The now exhaust, borla s-type, doesn’t have one. Is it how necessary is the shield and will I end up burning my spare tire only to find this out when it’s pouring down rain and I go to change it?

How close is your spare? Do you have a photo?

You should be safe though... rubber is tough and that part of the exhaust isn’t excessively hot.

I’ll take a picture tomorrow, but it didn’t look any closer than the old pipe

I've seen some posted over in the tire/wheels forum when members are putting 33's underneath and the tire is basically touching the exhaust, I saw a post or two that just wrapped the pipe with some shield tape and called it a day...some posts didn't have anything and didn't see any detrimental impact

Thanks for the heads up. I have no idea what shield tape is, but I know what I’m googling and shopping for next

You are more likely to wear grooves into your spare from the guides, than the exhaust burning into it.
