Long story short (kinda), I bought an all-in-one key fob and went to Lowe’s to have it cut. Well, the guy there mis-cut the key. I had a spare key laying around and decided to remove the key portion of the fab and swap in the spare key that I have laying around. It works and is already programmed to the truck. My dilemma is getting the key mated to the new key fob. What do you guys recommend for glueing a metal key to a plastic fob? I’ve tried gorilla glue epoxy and JBWeld epoxy putty and the twisting motion of turning the key has caused both to fail. Should I do regular JBWeld? Any other ideas?

TLDR: best glue for attaching metal to plastic.

I don't think you're really going to win this one.

Check out your local cobbler (shoe repair person). They have some gnarly adhesives that bond different types of materials. I know my cobbler does random repairs

Nah cyanoacrylate isn't flexible enough. The rotational load will cause it to crack very quickly.

I would suggest epoxy but that's already been tried.

Epoxy may still work if the key head and fob body were roughed and cleaned with IPA to give adhesion sites but otherwise...

I tried the gorilla glue epoxy. I may try a different type. It was something I had laying around so not sure how old it was.

I’m getting the impression by some of the posts that this won’t work. I figured I would give it a shot before spending another $30 on a key blank.

Use some sand paper on a tooth pick or other small stick to rough up the inside plastic of the fob in the bond area and use a dremel to put some hashes in the metal of the key head then try a 2 part 5 minute epoxy if you can they tend to hold better yet still maintain a little flexibility.
Use a small torch lighter and tap it to work al the bubbles you can out of it before working it in there.

Alternatively try 3M trim/moulding adhesive to build up in there in layers that stuff sticks to everything and holds pretty well.

I have a buddy who uses a pair of pliers to turn his jeep key and he's been wheeling that way for years. You can't lose your keys if they never leave the truck.

Just out of curiosity, did you talk to the Lowes manager? Seems to me that if their employee messed it up Lowe's would cover a replacement?

Regular jb weld is some pretty good stuff. But when trying to bond metal to plastic it’ll permanently attach to the plastic. The metal needs some cross hatched notches to keep it from simply sliding off.

Now that you’ve tried other stuff, if you don’t have a way to get rid of it, you’re really trying epoxy to old inferior epoxy.

Hm. Well, I guess I'll just consider purchasing another key blank. Will a dealership cut a key if I supply my own blank? Seems like my trust in chain stores has been broken.

Just bit the bullet and purchased another one. Guess I'll try taking it to someone that actually knows what they are doing next time instead of just sticking it into a machine and punching some buttons. Lesson learned, I suppose.
