Just found a wrecked 1999 tacoma v6 2wd with electronic rear locker for 350. I want to swap it for my 2021 rear diff. My ratio is 3.93 and the locker is 4.10. I am ok with the change in ratios, will hurt mpgs alittle but towing will be better. Is this a direct swap out mechanically and how will my abs, traction control and other electronics be affected. I plan on pulling the switch but i dont know if the computer is linked to it or just power the switch and all is good. And one do this swap and what are the pitfalls. I plan on replacing all seals and probably wheel bearings. It would be nice if i could use my original axles, hubs, ect just change chunk out. And how about the drive shaft hook up, thanks for the input.

Nothing is the same or similar between the two. It would be a lot of work.

This is a truly idiotic idea. What on earth are you thinking?

A differential expert will tell you if the diff will fit. Toyota is extremely slow to change things so there is a small chance it may be the same over all this time.

It won’t affect your ABS or traction control.

You will need to find a wiring diagram from 1999 for the hook-up.

The 1999 Tacoma has an axle width of 60.75" while the 2021 has an axle width of 65". You will also most likely find that the spring perches are equally narrower because the first gen Tacoma is a physically smaller truck.

You may want to contact Nitro or a shop that specializes in Toyota gears. They would be your best bet to find out if the Diff housings are the same/interchangeable?

Unless I'm rusty on this.... The 99 Elocker should be an 8", and also 8" the 2021. The pinion flange bolt pattern may be different. Wiring the locker requires a bit more than throwing power to it, but there should be multiple sources that show how to wire the older style Locker.
