Looks like an SR5. No trd stickers on the bedsides and the SR5 badge on the tailgate. Look at the dash switches to the left of the steering wheel. Is there a switch that says RR Diff lock or the switch for the power inverter in the bed? Look at the rear differential. Is there a goose egg on there with some wires? If you say yes to either of those then it is an offroad. If not then its an SR5. On an OR the shocks are yellow bilsteins if they are factory as well.

I don't think Off-Road and long bed was an option on 2nd gens. It's probably an SR5.

Either way looks super nice! Just make sure that if you want to buy it that you make sure because which it is, you wouldn't want to pay an offroad price for an SR5!

That's what I was wishing I would have done, but I didn't think to, and I also try to avoid peering through windows of vehicles that aren't actually in car shows because almost six years ago some psycho started cussing at me and demanded to see my camera after he caught me taking pictures of his truck from my own truck in the parking lot of the bank; The key advantage there is that I was in my own truck with the engine running, so I had him in my rear view mirror before he got anywhere near me...

But yeah, since that incident back in May 2016 I try to be a bit more sneaky when taking pictures of vehicles that most people would deem "boring" or "ordinary" unless they are actually in a car show or I have previously obtained permission from the owner. Haven't had an incident since!

That said, most of the 6-lug SR5s I see have the standard steel wheels, and the wheels seen on this black truck are largely exclusive to the TRD OR; I have seen other SR5s and even base models with these wheels, but Tacomas have incredibly interchangeable wheels so I assumed they were swapped out.

I think they may have recently changed it to now requiring an account to use the VIN lookup feature. Either way, in the past the Toyota VIN lookup would provide the vehicle specs/details, but nothing specific to the actual owner(s). Actually, here's an example I provided in one of your previous threads (;)): https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tacoma-stalking-er-uh-spotting-with-charlie™-2nd-gen-edition.622064/page-56#post-26681883

Does it have a rear diff lock (RR DIFF LOCK button)? If it doesn't it's NOT a TRD OffRoad.

The TRD Off Road package was not offered on the second gen Double Cab Long Bed - the only TRD package offered was the Sport.

3rd gens are available with the Off-road package on DCLBs

Srry, I saw the post and assumed it was someone looking at buying one and looking for the presence of a diff lock is the best way to differentiate a TRD OffRoad from a SR5.
Too many people get had by TRD stickers on a non TRD truck.

stupid question and don't mean to hijack the thread, but I was sold an trd sport 2wd(figured its better since i drive 80 miles on the hwy every day) that was debadged. I went through the vin check and it just states 2012 Tacoma PRERUNNER, so is it not an trd sport? where would it say trd sport? curious since this was purchased from a large nissan dealership rather than a toyota.

The TRD Sports are differentiated in that they have a hood scoop (unless someone put a non scooped hood on it), color matched mirrors with turn signals, and I believe a color matched rear bumper.

What vin check did you use?
If you used the Toyota Owners site.
It should say it under “Port or Factory” installed section.
This example shows the Off-Road Package, but the Sport Package should show up too.

    Run the VIN - 100%
When I was shopping, I saw a few Tacos with fake RR Diff Locker buttons . . . was not amused at all.
So much so, the dealer I went to for the truck I bought - had his mechanic crawl up under there and take a picture of the locker for me before I drove 3hr to see it.

Toyota recently changed their site so you need an 'account' to do this - very annoying but do what you need to run that thing and know what you are actually buying. Too many modifications possible to go by looks alone.
