I never left 3.3 until Windows 98 when software I used would no longer support DOS and updates ceased.

    Sure.
"know why it's called a kilt?" ---------- "Cuz that's what I did to the last guy who called it a skirt!"

"Know what a Scot in a kilt chats-up line to a lass is?" ---------- "Brace yourself!"

"What's worn under the kilt?" ---------- "Nothing, it all works perfectly."

When a good looking lass asks you if it's true about what a Scot wears under his kilt, the only reply is ---------- "Gi' us yer hand, Lass!"

When she does give you her hand, and you make proper use of it, and... she recoils after touching saying: "That, sir, is gruesome!" --------- The normal response is: "If ye put yer hand back, ye'll find it grew some more!"

We had (still have) the Beta-max version of these camera and and player/recorder. Few realize that "Beta" from sony was actually better quality, but due to the fact that Sony was so proprietary they held on to their higher prices , while VHS spread out and came down in price. Price sells! The Beta tech was all the TV stations used

While Beta did have a slightly better picture, the two biggest impacts to the consumer (and thus winning the war) was cost and tape length.

Sony originally limited Beta tape length to one-hour, which was good for a TV show, but VHS was two-hours out of the gate. Most commercial movies / movies on TV were less than two hours in length, and thus were better suited to VHS.

The other was cost, which you mention above... JVC licensed the technology to anyone, which drove innovation and cost down. Sony held their cards close to their vest, and lost. Indeed, price sells (or doesn't....)

Indeed. I used to work in video production and Beta was far better than VHS. I tossed out dozens and dozens of 5 min beta tapes the last time we moved.

I have not touched this stuff in a long time guys…..

I can’t show you a can of Pounce or a “scum” bag, but I still have a dusting brush and an elbow machine out in my shed.

My drafting board long ago became my electronics assembly bench. I have done almost 0 hand drafting since 1990.

OK guys, into the wayback machine.

    “Wow Mr. Peabody what’s that?”

Well, Sherman, that’s my drafting board from seventh grade in Woodland Park Minnesota (1967) The shop teacher gave me that when he realized that I enjoyed working a pencil. I also did ink on mylar but that was quite a job with the bow pen. You tested every line before you started on the “good” Mylar.

I’m sure he never considered that I would also use it to make obscene T-shirts. It also did a long tour of duty as a cutting board for grip tape. Nowadays I use it for cutting gaskets etc.

The German drafting tools were given to me by my first wife in 1978. The templates are a few that I have left from ones that I used up and destroyed over the years. I drew a lot of nuts and bolts stuff, but I also did technical illustrations.

I waited a long time before buying in on that technology and I am glad I did.

It taught me to let these things shake out just a little bit, and not to try to be on the cutting edge where you were likely to get lopped off by an unmerciful market.

I refused to buy a car in the 1970s. I drove 1960s and older cars until the 80s. Also I had motorcycles, which got much better about the same time cars got crappy.

I've got the same red, Koh-I-nor .3mm mechanical pencil and all of those templates (and many, many more). That's a nice set of instruments!

I marked a million drawings with that pencil.

I used to do prototype drawings, basically our secret in-house drawings, in red pencil too.

I used to have wooden checker’s pencils, with red on one end & blue on the other. That blue was not supposed to blueprint.

Then they came out with this special yellow pencil that wasn’t supposed to photocopy.

The idea was you could put calcs and notes on your drawing, but they wouldn’t show up on the copies that went to the shop floor, etc.

Anyhow my grandkids probably got away with all those red and blue pencils.

    .
I found my old K&E drawing instruments a couple of months ago while cleaning out some boxes.

I was doing all of my drawings while studying civil engineering and we had to draw everything by hand.

EDIT ... I just Googled my old K & E instruments and they are selling for $500.00 bucks. WOW ... I will find mine and sell them .... they are mid-1960's circa.
