I wonder if his truck has a tune to limit it? If you set all 5 to 6 upshift values to 256, it would never upshift to 6th. But then again, I imagine that the display would still read S6 if that were the case, as the truck can say S4 even if it's only in 3rd. It doesn't know that reaching 6th gear is unachievable...

@zoo truck, can you get a video showing this? Because I'm leaning on this being an issue as well.

So, to be fair I went back and looked up the other post and it turns out I misspoke, @zoo truck did not ignore what I said. He replied that he didn't have S6 and the dealer told him that was normal.

I wonder if the dealer fed him a line of bull so they wouldn't have to fix his malfuctioning truck?

    The other thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-does-the-s-mode-work-in-automatics.744223/#post-26495624

Even the manual says there are 6 gears in S mode.

I can't do a video...never ever learned to use a camera when i was younger. i'm pretty low tech here. About all i ever did well was ride my bike.
I've questioned this with the dealer a year ago, and they only told me your truck is all set, everything is good, and sent me out with two sheets of all the stuff they checked, or did. I just had to pick up a washing machine for a friend from lowes. Was a nice surprise to get a compliment how well the truck rode, and performed.

ECT increases the revs so you have more available power. that's why it's upshifting later.

According to this forum a KDMaxx tune will cure cancer, the common cold, and bring about world peace. Nothing, unfortunately, will erase an ex.

I could be just completely remembering wrongly, and I'm actually banking on that honestly, but I seem to remember trying S-mode shortly after getting my truck and it being limited to 4th or 5th, with no ability to even show S-6 like zoo truck is saying. I bumped into S-mode this morning just to try it out though and have 1-6, so I assume I'm either remembering wrongly (most probable), or the only other probable thing is my stock tune was a limiting factor (I'm now on a different tune).

Stock has S6 as well. Even from a stop, I've had no issues putting the truck into S6 mode, as there's no reason for it to not with the way Toyota designed how S mode works.

I would agree, and why I'm convinced I just remember that event wrongly.

You may be thinking about how it typically defaults to S4 mode. I say typically because the manual states it could default to a different gear limitation. Based on speed if I remember correctly.

You're probably right. Admittedly, I never found much use for S-mode, so never really tried it out much. The few times I wanted to use it, it was annoying that it just limited to that top gear, not actually held that particular gear.

S-mode, as stated a few places in the manual, is intended for engine braking, so only really useful in the mountains/hills, off-road, and maybe a few other rare situations.

Its great for towing my trailers. I leave in S5 and it locks out 6th gear. S4 comes in handy on long hills...don't need as much braking.

I have a simple flip phone if needed, and even its got a camera, and has voice mail, but i never use them...phones don't hold up well with me. I've destroyed too many to remember. I like my land phone best...don't have to carry it around, and it'll record all my messages.

Yes engine braking is its purpose. Idk why you avoid 6th gear otherwise though. You are likely just burning more gas. I do get lazy with my manual at times and leave it in 5th when I'm towing through rolling hills , but otherwise I toss it in 6th on the flat.

Not that many flats where i tow. Its hilly, but not huge hills. I'm surrounded by the taconic's, and berkshire ranges. Biggest one i tow to is mt greylock visitors ctr. where S5 is perfect. I'll get an easy 19 mpg doing the speed limits for the roads traveled.

Don't feel bad. I didn't get a flip phone tell I was 40. Had to upgrade to a smart phone because everyone wanted to text. Get you a KYOCERA duraforce, they are not the highest tech but can take an incredible amount of abuse and the glass is almost unbreakable. They are also the perfect size to fit in your pocket. Kids don't realize we didn't use computers in school and depending on what you did for a living may not have had a use for them.

OK, but your auto will shift for you and optimize fuel economy. No need to do anything.

FYI: I had a 2016 with an auto and experimented with S5 while towing after reading some misinformation on this forum, but later learned that it was not necessary.
