2016 Tacoma in limp mode, FIXED!

Thanks for the link to open up a case. Im wondering if a large enough backfire/misfire would cause enough force to break the plastic, perhaps related to the fuel pump recall.

 

I have the same issue truck going into limp mode multiple times when I drive aggressively or give throttle quick. When I turned the motor off and turn it back on, the issue goes away, but this one time it had all the lights on and check engine lights too. I took truck to dealer and they charged me $160 for diagnosis and then told me they need additional $495 to do additional diagnosis. I said no thanks and asked them to give me the print out of the codes. The code mentioned by OP is in print out too. I don't have the issue at the moment, but the incident caused me to lose faith and trust in my truck and I dont have the same love anymore . I don't drive aggressively, but i know i could easily reproduce the issue if I really wanted to.

Is this fairly easy to replace by yourself? If I go thru my extended warranty, it is still a $500 deductible so maybe I should just do it my self is what I am thinking if the part costs about the same.

 

Save receipts! In case Toyota finally acknowledges this as a design defect or similar...

 

I'm just aghast with my truck. It just went into limp mode AGAIN last night and it threw another P0303 code AGAIN! TRAC light on, CEL flashing. WTF is going on with this thing? Did the new intake plenum actuator door snap off AGAIN?

I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow to take it in. I can't believe my bad luck with this truck. It's giving me insomnia just thinking about it.

I swear that if the door snapped off again in the Plenum, I'm going to ask them to just completely remove it. I don't know if they will though.

If the door snapped off again, there's something seriously wrong with how the actuator is clocked, it has to be putting too much force on the shaft as it's rotating it. Do you think Toyota's techstream has a function that can adjust the degree's of rotation the ACIS operates in?

 

Just sort of responding to my post to keep everything concise. Dropped off the truck this morning; spoke to the tech at length about it. Told him about the plenum w/ACIS and it's integral door being replaced less than a thousand miles ago. Asked him to check to see if it snapped off again, and also asked him to scope my cylinders. He said he was also going to do a leak down test of the cylinders.

So I luckily got a RAV4 loaner and I am waiting for them to call me about my truck. Will report back once I learn more.

I also think you could take off the throttle body on the plenum and insert a small scoped camera in there, to visually check to see if the ACIS door has broken off and is laying improperly in the intakes. I plan to do that in the future if this happens again, before I take in in for the 4th time. If I find it snapped off again, I will be removing the plenum myself and removing that door.

 

Had this same issue on my '18 on multiple occasions. Toyota finally re-purchased the truck under lemon-law.

 

My truck and my experiences with it so far don't qualify under the auspices of the Maryland vehicle lemon laws. I'd really rather that it's fixed, than to surrender it for less than what I've already installed in it aftermarket. This was supposed to be my retirement gift to myself. Hell of a gift it's turning out to be.

 

Ya, but how do you line all of that back up; if the door's shaft is not snapped? The other end of the door's shaft is captured further in the plenum for rotation, and you can't see that end at all if you decide to pull that actuator body out a bit.

I still have not heard from the dealer's service department. Either they're getting balls deep into it or they're still scratching their heads.

They did have another 'Taco (earlier model) with it's heads removed, and they were repairing a valve. Same symptoms the tech told me. I hope it's not that. In order to R&R the heads I think they have to pull the engine, and I have that Hiline bumper w/winch and Bay Area Metal Fabrication's frame horn reinforcement brackets installed. A real bitch to take all of that apart and remove it; if that's needed to get the engine out.

My next vehicle (if there's one) I ain't modifying anything like what I've done to my 2018 'Taco. I can't relive all of this horror of time, effort, blood, sweat imparted to a vehicle; only to see it become done in vain.

Thanks for letting me vent. I'm just exasperated right now. So disillusioned with Toyota. Not what I remembered from past vehicles owned.

 

I just got a message from the dealer, my truck is ready. Going to pick it up this morning.

Technician Notes::
REMOVED INTAKE MANIFOLD TO CHECK INTAKE VALVES, WHEN I REMOVED THE SPARK PLUG #3 IT WAS LOOSE. COMPRESSION WAS ESCAPING FROM THE SPARK PLUG THREAD CAUSING MISFIRE AND SETTING A CODE. I USED THE BORESCOPE TO SEE INSIDE THE CYLINDER BUT NOTHING ABNORMAL WAS FOUND.

Makes me want to snug the rest of the plugs when I get the truck. Hopefully he practiced due diligence and did that.

Not sure what else he checked. I will try to talk to the tech when I pick the truck up and return the loaner.

 

Make sure to let us know if the issue resurfaces....

it is easy to do if you have the tools. Instructions on upper manifold / plenum are in the attachment I posted above. Probably some youtube videos out there somewhere too.

 

I had the same symptoms and code I believe p0303 from what I remember. Auto zone called it a cylinder 3 misfire. Toyota dealer said the spark plug was loose as well. Replaced the coil and put all new spark plugs in. This all happened while traveling so luckily a Toyota dealer was able to do the work on a Saturday. I haven’t had any more problems since January. Hope this fixes your issues.

 

A shop told me you can remove that part if you put a supercharger kit on it. My truck is in the shop waiting for extended warranty to approve the repair. Same thing. They thanked me for saving them time to troubleshoot. So thanks to all of you guys who share info here.

I've been looking around for another solution to what might be the cause of my truck doing the same thing, I literally replaced everything and could not figure out the root of the cause. As soon as I took off the pelleum and removed the actuator it too was broken... What a hefty price to pay if you do not check this along the way lol. Thanks agian, I would have never found this.
