Jokes aside we actually were close to pulling the trigger on a diesel with a slide in 4wheelcamper. It would have saved some money but what ended up being a deciding factor was that in such a setup the living space is separated from the driving space. So you can only use one at a time. With the van setup both are integrated so you have a lot more living space at the end of the day. Time will tell how much I handicapped us with such a large truck on the trails.

 

I’m all about the camper trailer life. But with my hobby’s I’m fine with finding a nice camp spot and setting up shop for a week or two.

I need to do more research on it. Kinda felt like 70mph was top speed for it. Engine was at 2700rpm-ish. So a regear wouldn't be great in that regard if I'm truly on 3.55 gears. But semi related would be to find a FF D60 for the rear.

Lol also limited by wheel width. So that's a no. Was gonna stick with 265 but the manager at discount tire convinced me to step up. Hope it's limited trimming...

 

2700 at 70? How much does that van weigh? Even with a heavy van that seems like a horribly high rpm for that mileage and (relatively) light weight?

 

It's a sign that it wants bigger tires!

I could be misremembering but the engine feels happier at 65 than 70+ like my wife was cruising at lol

Haven't gotten it in the scales but it's around that.

 

That speed and RPM almost has me thinking your OD was off...when im pulling anything on the highway im fighting to keep it 75+ mph so I stay in the boost and keep EGT's down. Which is around 2k RPM in 4th/OD. Unless that thing is geared pretty high. Im running 3.73s with 35s. And I know even 4.10's on stock 265s doesnt do 2700 RPM at 70mph. Thats interesting. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was 4.56+. It would turn 35's with ease right now.

No I'm just a goof. Drove it today and it hums at 1980 at 70mph. There may be a speedo error, I haven't gps compared it yet but will on the commute home. Certainly will be error once the 33s go on. Once I get a floor jack that can lift the rear axle I'll verify the 3.55 gear set in it.

One question I have, it got down to the mid 30s last night. Fired up like a champ today but I was expecting a voltage drop when the glow plugs are on. I don't notice any drop though. Is that normal?
