Okay I have a question, just finished watching 21’ dts. And as far as I can tell from what they showed there’s no way only unlapping the cars between Ham and max could have been that big of a difference vs unlapping all the cars, especially since max was the only one who pitted and was on fresh tires. Granted I wouldn’t be surprised if they spinned it a little bit, but I came away from the final episode feeing like Toto was whining because he fucked up and didn’t change tires like max did…

like Hamilton had last season, seemed there where a few races where he started from the back and was still able to pass everyone…

They unlapped only a few cars to start the race back up and not finish under a yellow. Masi made a decision to not ulap the cars and finish under a yellow but then Horner got on the radio to Masi and said to unlap only the 5 cars instead of all of them so Max would have a chance to race Lewis with no cars between them., then Masi changed his decision to Horners suggestion thwarting the unlap rule he is supposed to adhere to and unlap all 8 cars.

Thoughts from anyone on the RB "strategy" to not allow Sainz passed Perez until after the restart? I am not sure how that is even an option for them.

I think it's a viable option since they are no longer required to let drivers pass. They can choose to give places up or be awarded a penalty later - seems like Red Bull just decided to see how far they could push the decision and still get away without a penalty.

It's not against the rules so it was a good strategy. Until they make a specific rule about that type of situation it will be allowed.

Cars are not allowed to overtake during yellows unless told by director.

wasn't a strategy , they were avoiding a penalty that would have been applied because Sainz was ahead when both cars crossed the white line at the pit lane exit , technically Perez lined up out of position behind the safety car

Good point. The pass was under yellow to begin with. Maybe the steward(s) or Race Director should have addressed this?
I could almost hear Massi's voice telling RB that "we know what you're tying to do. Just let him through "now"".

The "strategy" was to wait until the green to make the correction. Eliminating the opportunity for Sainz to attack Max on the restart.

Sainz can't overtake behind a safety car

It was so damn close that Perez probably didn’t know he had done wrong. After the team reviewed photos they realised he was in the wrong, hence letting Sainz past at the next legal opportunity.

unlapping all cars would have taken too long so the safety car would have been unable to come in to the pits with any green flag laps left

How was Will’s commentary during the race? He’s good at asking questions and getting people to talk but I didn’t rate his commentary during practices… Plus he does my head in during the grid walk, guy needs a chill pill some times.

I switched to the international feed and listened to Crofty and Jenson for the race.

If they had unlapped all the cars the race would have finished under yellow and Hamilton would have won the race and the drivers championship. There was no precedent for only allowing a few select cars to unlap themselves.

Buxton had a great idea after the fact. Red flag the race, everybody gets fresh tires/unlapped and we have 5-6 laps to see who wins. Hindsight 20/20
