I’m pretty sure the 86 is more Toyota than the mkV is

He'd be surprised how much of that is Toyota engineering and not BMW. Basically most of the chassis and some of the software programming is there's and then the fluff that doesn't matter. But that engine and transmission would not work in a Z4, not with the tuning and extensive reworks everything went through with Toyota. And they didn't just slap suspended on that's fully engineered stuff. The car is pretty amazing for what it is.

It's the same engine and transmission the Z4 uses. A little bit of tuning doesn't make it a Toyota.

    I'm not saying they're not nice. I'm saying it's not a Toyota.

Yes they started out as BMW. If you made it the supra engine to the BMW Z4 it wouldn't work. There's a lot of engineering in here that is Toyota. Go drive one. Compare the two. The Z4 is very tame by comparison.

Lol. It's the same engine. Tuned different, sure. But, it's still the same engine.

There's no reason it wouldn't work. People swap engines into entirely different platforms and they work.

I realize that they did a little more than just slap a Toyota badge on a Z4. But, it's still a BMW platform and drivetrain.

Go through the Toyota technical manuals that detail the stuff out.

Yes I know people swap engines lol but this is far more than a simple badge change, which is what most internet fanbois would have anyone believe.

But anyways.... Since none of us have one..... Lol

Definitely not an internet fanboy. I've been a Toyota guy since I was a kid. And, I've been interested in the Supra since before they became popular.

It's disappointing when your dream car is finally brought back as a reworked version of another manufacturer's vehicle. You can say anything you want about how Toyota went through every aspect of it. It does not change the fact that it started as a BMW.

As I've said, I realize it was more than slapping a badge on a Z4. But, it's still a BMW in my eyes.

Oh I agree 100% I just think it's comical when there are "purists" that hate the new one (without having driven it).... And forget that every iteration of the Supra has been a Collab.

Oh, I don't hate it. I'm sure it's fantastic. It just doesn't appeal to me as much as previous generations.

And, I know they have had help from Yamaha and Lotus (and others?) in the past. It just seems the new one took collaboration to a different level. I understand it from a business perspective. I just don't like it from an enthusiast perspective.

Right because the previous cars were Toyotas with input from Yamaha in the engines and lotus on the chassis and suspension whereas the current car is a BMW with input from Toyota on the same things.

Speaking of... The stuff that Mazda, Yamaha, and Toyota working on as far as internal combustion with hydrogen is really freaking cool

I haven't read about the hydrogen stuff. This does sound cool! I'll have to look into it.

Seems like a lot better potential for being green than electric cars.

You must have had the Z28 hopped up, as an '85 Supra was actually faster than a '79 Z28.

    Agreed!

Well, I googled it out of curiosity. It looks like an '85 Supra was just a hair quicker than a '79 Z28.

I was curious because a buddy of mine from high school had a mid-80's Z28, and I actually raced him in my '85 Supra. He pulled away, but not by much.

Late '70's and early '80's domestic V8's were total dogs due to emissions.
