It's less Tacoma and more mod
Really depends on what you're up to, even the stock paperclip cooler does a pretty okay job just servicing the rack with 33" tires in most every condition. DexIII ATF doesn't get nasty until 230+ degrees for sustained time and power steering on a rack vehicle is seeing a load with occasional spikes. A cooler would help a bit but probably not a lot until you increased tire/wheel weight/size or had a steering gear or ram assist style setup on a solid axle.

Yeah not sure at all. I do know I have enjoyed seeing my fluid stay much more red after hard trips after the cooler, so I know it's definitely helping.

I plan to do this when I swap radiators. Even if it warms the coolant it's still designed to keep temps at a safe level for atf. I don't think it's going to add anymore heat to the power steering system than what it's already seeing. My skid pretty much blocks any air flow over the return line so I would think when crawling having the fan atleast pulling air though the cooler would be a benefit.

We'll have to pull out your temp gun and compare next time we're wheeling.

I would think the fan should also be pulling air through my cooler that sits just in front of the condensor.

Def seems like an interesting experiment. Don't forget to target both the inputs and outputs for a true comparison.

I think it would be interesting, but there's so many other factors that would skew the results. Tire size/weight being the biggest one probably.

That's why I figure if you compare the difference of input and output you might be able to still get a solid comparison. Like if yours was input 220* output 180* and Ryans was input 200*, output 180*, *theoretically* yours is doing a better job cooling. But that's redneck math since I have no idea on the laws of thermodynamics. :p

    Speaking of trans coolers.
I use a 3/8 GATES 4219GB Barricade Fuel Hose from Napa for a section of the return line (from the radiator outlet to the trans cooler inlet). I'm questioning that hose and have since ordered one from Hayden.

I'll be doing an 800mile trip real soon and I would prefer to not have to change the hose until I get back but if it's going to create a problem I'll handle it now.

    IMG_20220323_201934.jpg
Zip tied the sob for initial installation and then order the mounting bracket kit and the extra hose for a proper install

I went to Napa with the trans cooler in hand and they just sent me to the back by myself to rummage for a hose that fit. The 3/8th Gates fuel hose was the only one that fit so I snagged 3ft.

I just looked it up and its good up to 210°f and hopefully my transmission won't get that hot for a long time but I don't know if the ATF will effect the house or even if the hose will contaminate the ATF.

Probably better to play it safe and swap it out

Spent more time pondering the hose than I did swapping it and I only got one drop of ATF on my shirt

I cut a section of the fuel hose I just took off to look at it for shits N giggles.

Damn starter died on me, rebuilt it 2 years ago....battery is fine and even wacked the starter a few times and nothing besides a single click. Bought a replacement from O'Reilys since it's sitting at work right now so hopefully I can get that swapped tomorrow and bring it home :frusty:

If I can find the damn thing and you will likely be in the 2nd gen when we meet.

Yes, agree you cooler will have air pulled through it also. I don't have room there anymore and that leaves the auto trans rad the next best thing.

Plan a trip that involves technical wheeling and fishing and I'll show up in the 1st gen still. :D

There's a certain spot in MT that needs returning too...

Sorry to bother but do folks happen to know the part number for the plastic cover that goes over the nut and wire that screw onto the alternator. Mine is cracked and oddly burned it seems like. I put it back on and secured with black duct tape which is why it’s not easy to see in the third picture.

I ordered it off eBay but the packaging made it look like it had originally been sold on Amazon. If you search for "2.75 Toyota cup holder insert" you should find some similar items. I can't find the exact one I bought though.
