The in-bed rack is super nice, apart from having to take the wheel off and secure it separately. A buddy of mine who's a former bike mechanic tells me that having a bike "in" the vehicle (instead of on a hitch rack) is better for insurance reasons in case you're involved in a crash.

I recommend a wheel-on rack if you can, but a 6-foot bed isn't long enough for a modern MTB with the wheel on unless you put it at an angle.

RockyMounts makes some nice wheel-on racks. 1Up if you want to go all out.

Tailgate pads are also nice, but the low bed sides on our trucks are less-than-ideal for them. They can work, they just work better on a taller tailgate.

@Sperrunner So some thieves started to steal the units behind my workspace. They must've gotten spooked in the process, unless they were planning on coming back to get em. There's a perfect place to pull a vehicle behind there because of the dumpster.
Mine's fixed, but he's gotta finish the other three.

It's probably tight with the shell on mine, but I like that route. I'm still thinking about selling the shell, I'd definitely add that if I do.

It's crazy what a pair of bolt cutters can do to a place.
And all that for a $50 score. Damn
