I have used almost every version of AutoCAD since 2000i but I've never even seen Solidworks.

 

Didn’t mean to sound pretentious there. I don’t mind where it came from, I know it’ll last, especially with my mild use.

I love it when an old tool, no matter where it come from, is rehabbed and put back to work.

I can picture it. A bud asks where you got the nice, shiny, new vice and loves it.

You now have a beer worthy story to include with your comment.

I'm just kidding around. That is a nice vice. Looks just broke in.

 

I’ve heard that Autodesk tried many times to drop Autocad and migrate everyone to Inventor, but there’s a significant number of people who find 2D to be perfectly adequate.
For our actual products, a 2D sketch is adequate, but for tooling & machine parts a 3D model is much better, and necessary for parts to be 3D printed.

 

Makes me think of that quote from forever ago. About not being impressed because you didn't invent it, you just bought it.

I've watched so many rusty vise restoration videos on youtube I was all excited to tackle my own

 

I used Revit for projects at my previous job but everything I do now is just 2D plans. I've done a few 3D designs in CAD that I've then 3D printed but TinkerCAD is much easier for that. I can't remember if Inventor is included with our subscription or not.

 

I used to use Tinkercad a lot at the machine shop, I mostly stick to Sketchup these days though.

 

I played with Fusion 360 a bit when I bought my 3D printer for home use. It’s a cloud- based Autodesk product which is free for personal use. Much different feel from Solidworks or Inventor, and I never got good at it.
My 3D printer developed a problem a couple years ago and I haven’t bothered to try to fix it.

I now have a work laptop with Solidworks on it, and could print personal stuff at work if I wanted to, but haven’t really needed/wanted to. I have enough work-related gadgets to model/print to scratch the itch, I guess.

The biggest problem I’ve had with them is smacking the handle with a big hammer and breaking the threaded piece off inside, other than that there’s nothing wrong with em

Under the fresh paint that old girl has some serious wear, look at the misalignment of the jaws. Imagine if it could talk.
