What kind of tonneau is it? Fiberglass? Fake leather snap on? Roll top? Three piece?

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. Apologies if this has been covered but I wasn't able to find much using the search function, or at least not much since back when the GFC and SP were much closer in price. I am strongly considering replacing my old FWC Eagle with a Super Pacific X1 or a GFC V2. We haven't needed the full set of camper features as much as I'd thought, and I've really been wishing I could use my truck as a truck again.

I'm much more drawn to the SP. It seems to be more solidly built, and I like that it is designed around a legitimately comfortable mattress and that there's space to stand up behind the mattress. There are so many details that make it more appealing than the GFC, but I'm still having trouble justifying the extra $4k for what is essentially a very similar product. My wife is tired of camper discussions and has told me to just get the one I think is best, so I'm turning to the internet for help. I'm sure I'm not the only person that has faced this dilemma, so I'd love to hear from anyone who has made a decision between these two options. Basically, I suppose I need someone to talk me into spending the extra $$$. Thanks in advance for your input.

At the end of the day, the SuperPacific, GFC, Vagabond, OVRLND, Hiatus, Adventure Trailers Habitat/Summit/Atlas, and the rest just have one feature: quick bed set up and tear down. None of these are like your FWC with its feature set (couch, table, sink, kitchenette, heater, electrical system, toilet, shower, whatever else you have).

Knowing that, what do you really want to do with a new camper and "use my truck for truck stuff".

I'm a V2 GFC owner (lurk this thread for build ideas), I also debated between a GFC, SP, and a Vagabond. The extra standing area in the SP seems like it would be nice, but I couldn't justify the extra price. The GFC is solidly built and I think people just like to complain about the mattress more than anything. What sold me on the GFC was the short lead time (weeks). Regardless the SP does seem like a great camper, I do like the look of the doors and the interior features (wire channels etc.).

I have owned several cabover campers. With electric jacks it only took 15-20 minutes to load/unload. The ones with manual jacks maybe 35-45 minutes including removing the jacks for more side clearance using battery hand drill. Campers are warmer and just more comfortable particularly as you get older.
But if you want to get to the tougher more secluded locations the wedge types are better.
My decision to get rid of my cabover NorthernLite was because my wife decided she was tired of traveling. So after much research and seeing several of each at the shows, I ordered the SP. Probably not the best deal financially, but being deep into my 75th year and needing to get up in the middle of the night, I don’t want to be climbing up and down ladders in the dark…LOL! Thus the cost delta was justified.
FYI, now my wife has decided she wants another cabover camper. I can’t win no matter what!

Hi Jason, thanks for your response. I didn't mean to imply that I was questioning the merits of the GFC and SP as compared to my FWC. We do not need all the features of the FWC, which is why we're looking at the campers I mentioned. As far as using my truck for truck stuff, I only meant being able to put a bike or a piece of furniture in the back when I need to.

@mattsolnitzky Yeah the short lead time is definitely tempting. I'm glad to hear you say it's solidly built. I feel like there's a reputation of flimsiness with GFC, but maybe that is more about the V1 camper. I'm also much closer to Belgrade, MT than Portland, so that makes GFC tempting as well.

@Ridgewalker1 You hit the nail on the head. There are times that a slide-in cabover camper is really nice to have, but you always have to choose what most closely fits your needs at the moment. If I had somewhere to keep the FWC, I would be tempted to load and unload it as needed. Unfortunately, whatever camper I have will need to stay on my truck full time, and it's become hard to justify daily driving with an FWC on my truck. Glad to hear you're liking the SP.

I picked the SP for lead time (at the time), proximity to Portland for support, and a few key design changes vs the V1 GFC - V2 wasn't available at the time.

ptradm, I haven’t picked mine up yet. Only paid the 75% so far. Due now in May. They just informed me yesterday that their move into the new factory is slowing things down.
I don’t envy them one bit having to move a manufacturing business! Been there and done that. Pain in the rear!
The good news was that they will have the space for more people which should help reduce their lead times once they get up to speed.

FYI, no camper nor RV is perfect for every situation.

I chose the SP because the Vagabond that had been promised for July 2020 hadn't arrived my March 2021. Also, the GFC V2 wasn't available when I ordered (Nov 2020), and even if it had been I liked the mattress and bed platform with extra space at the rear in the SP. HAVING SAID THAT, as a biggish guy I would have preferred the 30" opening in the Vagabond to the 20" opening in the SP. Keep bumping my shoulders. Also, the Vagabond roof is all aluminum vs. the SP composite roof with seams that some have had leaking issues with (hasn't happened to me). Last but not least, I love the push forward sleeping platform in case I want to hang in my camper due to bugs or weather, so I kinda wish I had spent the extra on the Summit with it's lift up sleeping platform and bed area height that allows you to leave the mattress inflated (except then I'd spend half again as much all in and have small side doors and a heavier camper).

Lead time was the big attraction for me as well. Price difference wasn't huge when I ordered but GFC and Vagabond tack on fees and/or upgrade costs for things that are included in the SP price. SP likely would have cost less as a result, and had a bunch of features I really liked.

If I had to order one today I might swing toward GFC. It still has a few aspects I don't like but they're quoting a 3 month lead time, and I think I could deal with the shortcomings for ~$3k savings. At the end of the day all I want is something that sets up in seconds so I can crawl in quick when the weather sucks.

How about SP not wanting to be paid in full when you place the order?

Could have sworn a company or two were like that.

I liked the fact that you didn't put down a big hunk of money till it was actually being built. I dont want someone sitting on my cash for 2 years.

Yeah I would not be cool with putting down the full price or even 50% on a camper that was 12-18 or 24 months out. If actual lead times are 2-3 months I don't have an issue with it.
