The claim is 120 is a state highway until it gets to the park. Then it becomes Yosemite until it gets to the other end.

This is correct. 120 is federally-maintained between this location in Tuolomne County and the east gate in Mono County.

I stand corrected. The Feds do all the road maintenance in the park.

I just looked at my sources and while my employer pays YNP for certain road maintenance projects in Tuolumne Meadows, I can’t say whether or not the State also funds projects. I could have sworn I was told they do but I can’t figure out where I heard it.

Also they only paved 120 in the park once (in the last 15 years) but it took them like five years… it felt like forever. Looks like they’re gearing up to do some more major road improvements.

    Buy an a
Id gone through a few times without a reservation last year. I guess it depends on who you talk to, but they can give you a 3 hour permit just to drive through without a res.

They’ve been creating paved parking lots and improving drainage systems to eliminate roadside parking in tuolumne, to improve safety and reduce erosion in the meadows.

edit: reduce sedimentation from roadside erosion.

Yeah I heard that. I also saw that YNP closed the Tuolumne Meadows campground for the season (or two) and they’re getting rid of the whole “a” loop.

All this maintenance has been long over due but I guess the Tuolumne River plan didn’t get finalized until a couple years ago.

I’m pretty sure it said the same thing last year… oh well. I guess we gotta plan to hit the entrances non peak hours.
