LOL. That’s the old school vapor lock trick/fix. Not going to lie it save me more than once.

edit: used the windshield washer to do this.

Stumbled on this post from the front page. Great work OP!

Even with this gigantic-ass cooler in front of my evaporator, and a fairly open grille, my trans temps are consistently in the 200s, and well over 220 on the hills. And this is not towing -- just keeping up with fast-lane traffic on CA desert freeways, while thoroughly overloaded with camping gear.

Hoping the ECU-reported trans temps are erroneously high, but planning to do a transmission fluid service soon!

I know it will shock some, but try turning off the AC.

I tow a 5,100 lb trailer and swapped out the stock cooler for a Tru-Cool 4589. Hit 250 at the TC and 230 at the pan pulling up a big long hill. HAD to pass a military caravan. Once we crested it dropped 20 degrees in about 10 seconds. Changed the fluid (drain by just removing the drain plug and replaced that amount with new fluid) after that trip and expected goo. Was still light red. Slightly darker than new. First time changing the fluid and it was around 55k miles. Temp and degradation charts are referencing that temp for an hour solid, NOT the occasional bump and drop you get from normal driving and towing.

I want to monitor my new rig's temp. Is it OBD oriented?

Here's what I use on Torque. Not sure which ones work, but one if not both pairs of settings gives plausible readings on my '05.

Scangauge II, Ultragauge MX, or Bluetooth OBD2 reader with the torque pro app on your phone.

Edit: you can’t read the temps out of the box, you need to program in a PID. It’s not difficult though. Took me ten minutes on the scangauge.

This is in my tundra but same thing applies.

Awesome post man. How is that heat shield sleeve you used holding up? Im surprised they used Velcro on something thats supposed to withstand 600*F

Is the idea behind it to keep temps down? From more fluid and AL acting as a heat sink? If you didn’t check before and after temps, what’s the point?

The point is it’s cool. Not too many have one, lol. I generally do 30K services on it with the stock pan. Pushing this interval to 70K which will put me at 150K miles. As far as temps yeah I should check with this pan. The stock pan in traffic on a 95 degree day would see 195 with no load.

Dang, now I’m looking at aluminum pans for my tundra. Didn’t know they existed but it’s a good idea. Gonna have to do some digging on their effectiveness.

PML is the manufacturer. Now I’m not sure with aftermarket market skids if they will work. Solid piece for sure. You don’t have to worry about dropping the pan to clean magnets. The drain plug has a magnet on it. Installed it at 80K, currently at 114K. I also use Amsoil SS blue cap atf as well. Shifts are smooth.

That’s who I was just looking at for the tundra as well, a quick search on the forum and they seem to be well renowned. Thanks for sharing.

No problem. 3 or so years ago they we’re looking for suckers to test their pan, take some photos and give your thoughts. If all went well they sold it for 150. My review may still be on their site.
