For the last few years, here on the I-5 corridor in Northern California, I frequently see Tacomas towing other Tacomas loaded with parts and in a Caravan of 4 or 5 others, all headed South.
Does anyone know who's buying all of these parts and project trucks?

We need pictures! And how do you know these Dodge Caravans are loaded with Tacoma parts? It would make more sense that they would be Jeep parts.

They all go down to Mexico. It's a common business venture. A lot of people will buy a crapload of cars at auction and tow them South. They sell the ones that are fixable and chop the ones that aren't.

The real smart ones fill the cars to the brim with furniture/clothes from garage sales. It's a common sight from California to Arkansas and beyond.

From what I've heard there's good money to be had doing it.

I had a feeling they could be headed to Mexico.
Cars we would send to the Crusher here will be still being used in Mexico a Hundred years from now.

I have seen them too driving down the 5 south. I asked the fellows while they were pumping gas and they said they were hauling them to Guatemala to resale. They said they pay really good money out there for older Toyota pickups.

I've talked to some who do this as well and that's what I was told too. I can only imagine Guatemala being littered with classic Toyota trucks.

At least as of five years ago it was really hard to (legally) import an older vehicle into Mexico; only certain years and models are allowed to be imported. Maybe today that's different.

Still the same. Legal importation can’t be older than 9-10 years old once you leave the border zone. The older vehicles are called chocolates and there is a govt office that will give tags for it to be “legal” in Baja. Probably other areas as well but harder/impossible to drive an unregistered vehicle deep into mainland Mex.
