Lots of good debate regarding purchase decisions. Lets hear some reasons people buy new over used or used over new. Open some minds and maybe some eyes!

Used = Best value. Let someone else take the hit on depreciation.

New = Pristine and untouched, a virgin. Order it exactly like you want it.

May not be the best bang for the buck financially, but nothing like that new truck smell; and the thought that no one else has been screwin' up your ride ;)

New: Warranty, and you haven't had someone like me breaking your stuff before you got your hands on it.

Used: Already depreciated, and if you can find one already built to your liking it's like upgrading for free since modifications don't factor into the vehicle price during a sale. Nothing wrong with a free lift, wheels, tires, etc.

I don't trust other people, so I like buying new. But it's not a huge deal to me. I would buy used as well.

I'm in favor of buying used (1-3 years old.) This is what I did. You don't have to pay sales tax (buy private party) or take the initial depreciation hit. The vehicle is still practically brand new. Usually if you buy used less than 2 years old you can still get "new car" financing rates. Someone else has already broken it in so you can drive it like you stole it. Most Factory warranties are transferrable. Mine had the toyota extended warranty on it which was transferred to me (I never had to use it). I'm not big on buying warranties anyways (waste of money IMO when you're buying Toyota or Honda).

Virgin's are nice, but considering the body design is nearing EOL, I'd opt for fresh, but used.

My old Toy got zipped Nov. '09 and I was faced with the same decision. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new one at well over $30K, but got a fresh '06 4x4 TRD with shell and 30K miles for just $18K. As a result, I wasn't as aprehensive when it came to modin it.

    $6K for a 5-year rig. ('96 w/ 160K)

    vs

    $14K for a 15-year rig. ('06 w/ 50K)

    vs

$17K for a 20-year rig. (Brand spankin' new!)

The life span estimates are approximate, of course. (Assuming 20 years / 200K mi.) But they lead me to conclude that, in this market, new is actually the best value for the dollar.

If the old saying about losing half the value when you drive off the lot were true at this moment, then that '06 would be going for $10K or less and I would have likely gotten that.

But when 4 years & 50K of wear only saves me $3K, screw that. Might as well go the extra distance & get a fresh start with a warranty and better financing.

That was my experience, anyway. YMMV.

When I was looking in late 09 I was looking at late model used (07-08) and two years old with 25k+ miles was only a few grand cheaper than brand new. It was a no brainer for me. I know cars have that initial depreciation, but with our tacomas it doesn't seem to be as much of an issue. They hold their value quite well.

I know alot of people like to buy used, but I love a brand new ride! The smell, knowing that I am the only one that has owned it, warranty. I'm not a mechanic, I can do some things, brakes, plugs, fluids, but thats about it. So having a warranty to me is nice.

First of all, it is very hard to buy used vehicle that was well maintained. Bunch of dealer records does not sway me. :)
But if you can find well maintenance vehicle then used is the way to go. Just tax, dealer fees will add up to thousands of dollars in savings, not including depreciation fee. However, in a instance when one would like to keep truck for next 20 years, New is better approach. This way history can be built of when what has been worked on it so no surprises..:D

I faced this choice recently when I bought my 2011. Certified Used Tacomas in the 2-3 year old range, and under 50000 miles had asking prices of $25,000 (3 yo 50000 mi) to $28,000 (2 yo 30000 mi). I bought a brand new 2011 for $30,000. I thought the few extra thousand were worth it to:
1.) Get exactly what I wanted (well, not my first color choice, but still....)
2.) Get the factory 3/36 warranty
3.) Not get someone else's problem truck

I don't have a problem buying used vehicles, but it seems that the depreciation hit is quite low on these Tacomas.

The depreciation is not low at all in the first two years...on ANY vehicle. Less on some but nevertheless HUGE on all.

Those prices you quoted on used were high. If you made a serious offer for the $22K on the $25K vehicle I would bet you could have bought it. My truck (08 24K TRD 2WD DC) was listed at $22,995. I paid $20500 OTD at a Toyota Dealership. $7500 less than a new one without the add on accessories which totaled $800 if I bought them.

Why do I think they were high? because of what I read here and other forums of Toyota owners.

Witness nearly everyone who bought new said they would not buy a used one for even $4000 less....(some of that comes from the payment mentality of only $50 more a month or so for new)

What does that say about the depreciation with real world buyers? They would have to save $5000 or more to even consider a year old truck with 15K on it!! That's RETAIL.....

Now the dealer will offer trade in value (there is your actual value) which will allow him to make at least $2000 and if certified add another $800 which is why I don't shop where they offer "certified" late model vehicles because of the additional charge and you STILL may want to buy a Service Contract on top of that. Certified is a marketing ploy which raises the perceived value of a vehicle a lot more than the dealer pays to do the certification IF they do the certification. On a late model vehicle you are better off buying at a dealership who does not certify (there are a few) and buy the Service Contract. I bought my truck at a new Toyota dealer that doesn't certify.

Can a dealer offer $24,000 ACV for a year old $28,000 truck and try to sell it for $26,500? I seriously doubt it. The dealer will offer $21,000 for a year old $28,000 truck and TRY to sell it for $4000 less than a new one.....
First year depreciation is harsh....very harsh. Yes even on a Tacoma because of the "buy new" for "only" $5000 more mentality.

Depreciation is not based on "asking" prices" It is based on wholesale trade in because that's what you can get today..right now. That is what your vehicle is worth. What you can get in the next 4 hours for it. Or what you are willing to wait for knowing you have to come quite a bit off the LOWEST prices people are getting new with zero rates. Either way it is a long cry from $28,000.

New truck (or car) Depreciation is huge....(not as much as some other brands but nevertheless significant in real dollars.)

When does it pay off to buy new?....(in my opinion, never) however if one keeps a vehicle for 10 years or more, it may pay off. But a used 12 year old Tacoma will not be worth all that much less...maybe $1500 than a 10 year old one all things being equal. Seems to me good running well maintained older trucks, and in particular old Japanese trucks are never worth nothing and can only get so low in price.

As far as paying zero interest in 36 months...the depreciation hit wipes that savings out and a lot more on a new vehicle. The 3/36 warranty is nice but a 1 year remaining manufacturer warranty is also nice. Another couple hundred and you can buy a two more years. WIN!!

I have found previous owners of new vehicles usually take good care of them because they fear losing their warranty. Many are OCD. OCD types could never buy used, They cannot fathom anyone else having turned that key or farted in that seat. I know them My brother is one. He made his kids take off their shoes before getting into his new vehicles..(even had Weathertech mats) he could have bought another house with the money he has thrown away buying new cars. He traded cars immediately if they had a little fender bender.... in 30 years has NEVER been without two car payments. Yeah he could not even consider a used second car.

I would have preferred to buy a 2 year old truck but when I was looking around they were going for close to what a new one would cost. The difference was only about $2000 so I went with a new one. If the difference had been more I would prefer to buy used because I'd rather the other guy pay down the depreciation. My last car was a 2005 Highlander that was fully optioned and only had 16,000 miles I got it for about 10,000 less than a new one so that was an easy decision.

A new car depreciates 20-30% the moment you drive it off the lot. If you get into an accident right when you leave the dealership in your brand new car, the insurance companies will only give you the the depreciated value of the car.

    Thats why i buy USED
