What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Hell yea. Still look wicked. I’m gonna try and get my hands on a set of those machined ray10’s for sure. Get that shit on the truck!!

 

Four things this morning. Plus, one question below RE radiator.

• Added a second set of Durobumps to the LCAs (to replace the front bumps this time)
• Swapped in some new LBJs. Old ones seemed fine when I checked them with the simple pry bar test, but had 2 years and 75K miles on them so better safe than sorry.
• Replaced the spherical bearings in the front coilovers - both bottom and top.
  • Tops got FKS10T-F1 - hardened steel w/tighter fit. These see less water abuse, and so last longer. They replaced the originals (3 years old)
  • Bottoms got FKSSX10T-F1 - stainless steel w/tighter fit. With more water abuse, I've really liked having the SS down there. As oppossed to the COM10Ts I've run previously where I got ~7-10K miles out of them, I got a full year and 40K miles with the stainless steel. Both sides were in "OK" condition and probably could have gone another 5-10K miles, but I replaced them because I was in there already. (@Digiratus, I know you're interested in this.)
• Skid plate persuasion.

On the spherical bearings, note how the old SS one is much less rusty than the old FKS. That rust is what ultimately kills them, I think as it gets between the ball and race. Plus, the lack of rust is really great for getting the retaining clips out, etc. All around just a nicer product to work with.





Finally, a question. Got a new radiator today. Has a bit of deformation from shipping. Is this anything to worry about?

 

I've never seen a rad come out of the box perfect unless it was from Ron Davis and hand delivered haha. I'd run that

 

Agreed. you can spread the fins back out with a pick if you want to be OCD about it. Personally, i would bend them back while it's out; fins that are bent that bad will prevent air from passing through which is a key design function of the radiator. BUT,... it would be just fine if you ran it like that.

 

I thought with duro's you are required to run at least one oem style bump to still set the bump travel?

 

Says the guy claiming his 315 are 35s.

Truck may very will still get a solid axle and bigger tires. We'll see how it holds up in it's current iteration.

And missed the edit on your last post. They're Hankook MT2s. I gave up on waiting for the Nittos, and had good luck with the previous version of the Hankooks.

 

yes that is i believe true. The duros will compress much more than the stock ones so now you can potentially bottom out the shocks. Depending on the shock.

With the old Duros, you were definitely supposed to put them on the rear and leave your front stops in place.

These are stops that he has specifically designed for the front of the LCA. They have a different mounting plate on the bottom (which is not angled like the rear) and also a different rubber composition to ensure limiting of the bump in the same way as OEM but with more cushioning.

Curtis doesn’t have these listed on the site yet, but I happen to be talking to him about the rear bumps (The links to them on my website were broken, and so I asked him if he was still selling them; he isn’t, apparently), and he offered to send me a set of these. Figured I’d give them a shot as I’ve been happy with his other stuff.

 

Now I want a set.

Huh? Where'd you get that from? I think you've been reading too fast or something. If I was unclear, I'm happy to 'splain again/more.

 

If he isn't selling the rear ones and only doing fronts now does that mean the front ones were designed to work with the rear OEM ones. In which case should you be doing that?

 

If he's not still selling the (rear mounted) front bump stops... He should probably stop listing them for sale.

Also... if he currently has a 21 day lead time "due to increased sales volume" I think it would be kind of dumb to stop selling them.

 

Ahh, I see where we're talking past each other.

The "rear" I was talking to him about were the rear axle bump stops (which I link to from my shock relocation post).

Currently for the front bumps, he only has the rear LCA mount bumps on his site (https://durobumps.com/product/1st-gen-toyota-tacoma-front-bump-stops/), and not these new front LCA bumps that I installed. Eventually, he'll have both rear and front LCA listed on the site, I suppose but still nothing for the rear axle, which he's discontinued; probably due to low demand (aka the 1st gen problem).

Or there not holder up well. It's a shame either way. They sure do make for a nice ride.
