Removing rear seats and back panel from 2016 Access Cab

Is it possible to install a 2nd Gen (later years 2015) rear access cab seat set up with back panels and seat belt set up into a 3rd Gen utility access cab?

Replying here because this is absolutely the best info on how to do the disassembly of the back trim of the Gen3 Tacoma Access Cab. For me it is all about soundproofing. The seats don't get in the way that much for the storage I want to do.

The cabin lets in a bunch of road noise, much of it coming from the back wall. That metal panel resonates like a drum head. The factory droop blanket helps, but is extremely minimal. Just pop the baby seat belt cover off and tap the back wall with your fingernail. It resonates like a drum head.

After temporarily removing the rear panel and seats (thank you Kevin604!) I covered about 98% of back metal panel area with strips of Dynamat. The strips of Dynamat were narrow enough (about 2 inches) so I could apply them to conform to all of the rib-like grooves. The Dynamat works best when it's continuously adhered. Wider strips would have made it difficult to adhere the new material to the metal shape without leaving air gaps between metal and Dynamat.

After that, full-sized sheets of closed cell foam (siless liner 157) can go on, without the fuss of making it conform to all the nooks and crannies of the ribs. It's easy to get 2 or 3 layers on the back wall. Just avoid the areas where the clips reattach the back trim (3 rows, as in Kevin604's photo shows). Easy enough to see as you work.

Soundproofed thusly, this makes a HUGE difference in cabin noise while driving. Doing similarly to the doors also helps the road noise and makes them open and close with a nice satisfying solid dead thud. But in my experience, the back wall makes the biggest difference in sound.

This is a great thread with all the details and solutions from others. Thanks for mentioning the impact to soundproofing in the way you did, definitely will be helpful to get as much of the bed-echo out of the cabin.

I'll have a full access cab rear seat out of a 2022 OR with all parts for sale soon. If someone has the utility package in black they would like to use a partial trade, I would be very open to that as well if it is great condition.

I did mine over about three weekends two or three months ago due to extremely limited free time. Yes, insulating the back wall yields a significant drop in road noise. I had done the same thing with my second gen right after I got it and the sound suppression in my current third gen was about equal. There is one more that I recommend you give attention to. I also bought the mating p/n carpet as part of this project seeing as I was already burning through money. With the original carpet out I found the rear floor pan in the lowest section directly behind the front seats was as resonant as bare sheet metal. The Toyota factory applied sound deadening did practically nothing. Applying Dynamat at 60-70% coverage there more than complemented the back wall suppression. With all back together the only bothersome sound coming into the cabin now is through the doors. I will mat them also this coming fall if I find the time and money to replace the entry level sound system and speakers that Toyota put in the vehicle. If your are not replacing the carpet as I did at least pull that back section up and mat that floor pan.

Is anyone looking to sell their rear seats? I have a 2019 tacoma utility access cab and I want to add the folding rear seats with seat belts. Anyone have any tips or parts?

Here's what it looks like after doing the backseat delete.
The previous owner did this and had this custom box installed for storage.
Unfortunately, I wanted the seats so I'm currently swapping it back out with trade of my back plastic for parts from another TW member here.
Having said that, if anyone is interested in this storage box for their back area, it is essentially a wooden frame that bolts through the upper portion of the metal storage bin of the cab. The lid then screws to the frame and has 2 lids with handles. I have all the hardware for reinstallation and can ship if necessary. Located in California.

Darin, if the question is for me, I decided to just remove the headrests and the seats. I have ordered a Goose Gear seat delete.

 

I installed the Goose Gear seat delete. It’s definitely pricey. But I like the design and quality. So, this is one of those buy once, cry once purchases for me.

There are no included instructions from Goose Gear for the access cab. (They have a link to someone else’s YouTube video on their website for the double cab.) So, it took some problem solving to figure it out. You would think at this price point they could at least send some basic step by step assembly instructions.
