Not completely true: many people are running mineral oil out to 10k plus OCI's with great results as indicated by analysis. The latest round of ILSAC and API specs (GF-5 / SN) are forcing manufacturers to make all oils very close to synthetic in performance.

In the USA? no there aren't any such laws beyond the generic 'truth in labeling' and 'implied warranty of merchantability' kind of laws. That was the subject, in fact, of a fairly well known lawsuit. In the EU, the term 'synthetic' is pretty well defined and in order to claim yours is a synthetic oil you have to meet that definition. But in the US it's much looser...it's more correctly a marketing term here.

But some oil 'groups' that aren't called 'synthetic' in the EU perform just as good as those that are (group III and III+ in particular). So it really doesn't have to matter for performance purposes. Since US oil mfr's are allowed to blend those oil groups with true synthetics they can make oils that perform as well as EU oils but are a lot more economical and still label themselves 'fully synthetic'.

You are correct, however nothing you just said backs up the claim that US synthetic oil is a recycled product that is worse than DINO oil as was previously stated.

Its marketing and advertizing and you guys believe it, you have no idea what you're pouring in your engine and if your engine blows up and you blame the oil, you'll never prove it.
I really don't care what oil you use, but at least I am smart enough not to fall for the slick marketing and advertizing bull.
In my world when any product needs to be advertized then that product is no good, cause the only reason they are spending big money on advertizing is because that product isn't selling cause its either no good or nobody wants it!
You people are like sheep, you fall for it!

Just because some so called expert on a cable 4x4 trucks tv show says he uses that brand of synthetic you think its the best, but you forget they are being paid off to say that!
If someone gave me a million dollars to go on tv and say its best to use bottled water in your engine crankcase instead of motor oil I would do it!

I don't care if it's recycled from pregnant boar piss if it performs well in service.

And you have said nothing to remotely support your claim that all US 'synthetic' is recycled product...or even defined what you mean by recycled or why it should matter if it is.

Interesting -- Dealer told me to use 5w20 synthetic in the Tacoma .. that's what they put in when someone asks for a synthetic change. If regular oil, then 5w30.

Go back and read my post and the post I was pointing to prior. No where did I say it was recycled. In fact I stated the direct opposite.

So based on your many years of experience in buying products that have never been advertised, since they are so good there is not need to advertise them, everyone just knows they are; what oil do you recommend to us less smart and totally stupid....

I presume you drive a Toyota, or at least lurk in Toyota forums; why do they spend millions advertising, and why were you so stupid to buy a mass marketed brand?

Its your truck, I don't care what brand of oil you use, just don't tell me what brand I should use. and don't tell me the brand of oil you use is the best, because you don't know how to know its the best.
Toyota does advertize, but they advertize the Tundra, never seen a tv commerical with the Tacoma.
Thats my personal rule if any product is mass advertized than that product is no good, and I don't buy that product. I don't care what you buy, just don't tell me this and that product is the best only because it is mass advertized.

You are right... I was confused by the wording of your post. I understood it to be you making the claim since it certainly wasn't I.

Yet I will stand by my statement: I don't care if it is recycled. There are plenty enough testimonials and UOA/VOA's out there that support any name brand oil certified to API SM/SN, ILSAC GF-4/5 being quite good enough when changed at a 5K OCI. If the MFR used recycled stocks, so be it.

Even a 10K OCI is not likely to do damage for the worst such oils...and anyone doing more than 10K OCI's without UOA's is just plain crazy IMO.

Those commericals are 10 years old!
Its the evil white capitalists with the big money that advertize poor quality products on us dumb, uneducated consumers. I have them figured out, the more they advertize their product the more they need to advertize cause their product is no good, if their product sold good and if it was of a good quality product they wouldn't need to advertize in the first place.
Everything I buy is based on that, that was one of the contributing factors based on my Toyota Tacoma purchace.
I am not bad mouthing the Tacoma, I love my Tacoma and I feel I am helping save the world by owning one, better gas mileage, less green house gas emissions. But those certain brands on synthetic motor oil stinks of big oil profits and it bothers me that they are charging you guys $10 a quart for what you have no idea whats in it for.
My brand? I have 2 years free oil changes from Toyota, I am fine with the brand they use, and when the 2 years is up I will take it to Wal Mart and have professional oil change technicians do the oil changes., they can do oil changes cheaper than what you can buy the oil and filter for!

Wow, and who was I to think that advertisements were to showcase the advantages of a manufacturers product to the consumer. Stating the relevant features and benefits and outweighing any drawbacks must all be a scam by the white capitalists. Good to know.

Very well. As far as the original question. I prefer mobile 1. I use it in my Tacoma and I change the oil twice a year, which equals around 8k miles. I do the same with my Jeep Grand Cherokee that has 310K miles on it and that runs like a champ.
