Has anyone bought the assembled 3rds and clamshell from ecgs?
I’m confident I can do the swap with the help of a friend who’s a very good mechanic.
Looking at the cost, once the cores are returned, the assembled 3rds from ecgs are only ~$300 more expensive.
Basically, I’ll be saving a lot of whatever the install cost is where I live. Unless I’m missing something…
I would really appreciate if anyone that went this route would chime in.
    Thanks

I did a core swap of an assembled 3rd and clamshell from ECGS and added F&R ARBs in the process. 2nd gen but the process is the same. 10/10 for me since I didn't have the know-how or experience re-gearing and couldn't risk that for my DD. They arrived about 2 weeks after I ordered and I had them swapped 2 days later with my cores refunded a week after that. It was a great process.

People made it seem like these gears added another 300hp so I ordered a set lol. Honesty I’m unimpressed. Idk how the overland trucks do it, they must be going 50mph on the freeway because all I got are 33 tires and my truck will still downshifts to 3k+rpm on overpasses or any moderate incline. I think the kdmaxx tune showed the biggest improvement by far and completely eliminates the need for 5.29 unless you are maxed out on weight and need help getting off the line.

It’s kinda worrisome to read all this posts about gears not making a big difference even more because I’m Thinking about ordering gears in a few days :annoyed:

Two months after my 5.29 install and what a difference. Not a single gear hunting episode in that time over the same roads that drove me nuts daily for four years.

I have a question for those of you towing with 5.29’s. I have a 4800lb travel trailer and per the owners manual I tow in S4.

With the 5.29’s do you now tow in 6th (or D) or do you stick with 5th??C0504895-5E96-4BC1-B2E2-BED14960B5D2.jpg

5.29s with 35s here and I'm very happy with the gears. I've had this setup for a few thousand miles now with the stock tune and it drives great. Much quicker off the line and holds gears way better without the hunting it had before. Only problem is the top speed limiter kicking in at 92/93mph.

I guess it's subjective, but I'm surprised some are saying they don't feel much difference after going to 5.29s. It's a night and day difference to me.

Curious about the limiter. Did you get something like a hypertech speedo calibrator after the regear and tire change?

The speedometer device just intercepts the incoming speed value from...wherever its computed in the truck, and outputs a new value to the instrument cluster based on the tire size you specify. It cannot affect the governer. As far as I know, the only option for that is a tune, which has been discussed multiple times elsewhere in this thread.

How many of you running Nitro gears are running their Nitro 80w-140 synthetic oil, vs another synthetic oil (what kind)? Any pros and cons other than cost?

There's a poll at the top, to see what viscosity everyone is running. Although I'm on 4.88's, I've been running 75w-90 with out any troubles. Just did a 22000 change the other day and all looked good. Some minute shavings on the plug but nothing I found worrisome

Sounds like torque converter shudder. How many miles since last fluid change? Unless manual then check your clutch.

Anybody got a link for a differential counterweight type of thing? I can't recall the name but it's supposed to change the resonance frequency. The whine is starting to drive me crazy

The dynamic damper that Toyota installs on th Hiace diff is part number 41196-26090. The Hiace differential carrier/case has a place for it to bolt, the Tacoma doesn't.

On the fence with 4.88 and 5.29.

Running 285/70/17, 2” in front, 2” in back. No plans for armor or extra weight,

Any thoughts? Usually don’t drive faster than 75mph, but once a year make a 10 hour road trip where speed limits reach 80 and 85.

    Thanks in advance
