Our mountains are smaller and covered in many more trees, plus most places here with a view like that are going to have a pretty steep lot too so less likely to find the detached garage.

I'm on acreage off a twisty country road in a town kind of equi-distant between Asheville (20ish mins), Black Mountain (20ish mins), and Hendersonville (30-45 mins). Asheville is very liberal. Hendersonville more conservative. I spend more time in Hendersonville than Asheville for the reasons you stated. We also like Brevard and the Highlands/Cashiers area (no jobs and $$$ here). The only time I go near Hickory is if we go up to Boone/Blowing Rock or I have to go to Charlotte for some reason. Old Fort is between Asheville and Hickory. Charlotte has way more jobs and probably higher salaries since the banking industry is big there. You have Weaverville, Barnardsville, Marshall/Mars Hill, Hot Springs, and Burnsville to the north (mostly in that order). If you are going to work in Asheville, living East is the best option. Anything that requires you to get on 26 in any direction blows.

I'm originally from Marion. (Small town further east of Asheville) Probably much too rural for your liking, but I've lived all over this area.
Brevard isn't a bad town and its just West of the Asheville area. Plenty of waterfalls around Brevard if hiking and sightseeing is your thing. Haven't lived North of Asheville, but again it's probably more rural than you'd like. I'm living just outside of Greenville, SC, now. (The northern part.) It's not bad at all. Plenty to do down here. It's about an hour South of Asheville though. A little on further down the road from Hendersonville (also a great town). My wife and I are planning to move back to Marion in 4-5 years because of land my grandparents are leaving me. Theres 130+ acres up there that could be for sale! If you end up around the mountains of NC/ Upstate SC, then don't hesitate to give a shout if you need suggestions of things to do or places to check out. I drive through Asheville daily on my way to TN for work.

I'm originally from Tigerville, SC. About 45 mins south of Hendersonville. We used to drive up that way to get beer on Sundays. :anonymous: A few years ago I was going to take a job in Morganton, NC but turned it down. Not sure if I regret that decision or not. Really pretty country up there.

Been through Tigerville area plenty going into Landrum area. Have family in Gowensville! Contemplated moving to Morganton after I moved out of my parents house. Nice area and not a big as Hickory or Asheville with mountains just right up the road.

My brother still lives in Marietta with his family. My mom lived in Travelers Rest before she passed recently. If we knew we could work remote for the remainder we'd probably look at moving up that way, or maybe towards Waynesville or the Lake Junaluska area. Somewhere not Greenwood, SC!

I actually looked a ton at Marion, Morganton and Black mountain too on realtor.com. Seems like your areas are finally catching up with the way our real estate prices have been up here in the past 2-3 years. Very difficult to find a house the size we need with the property I want for anywhere less than 600k that doesn't need to be gutted and updated. Unfortunately we have to put the thought on hold until at least another 2-3 years from now. Had a leak in the walls here and got all new plumbing lines run. Have a lot of moving parts to deal with (mostly family like my wife's parents) that we might even need to find a place with some sort of apartment style living space for her Dad because he was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Thank you for the suggestions, I appreciate it!

Sorry to hear about the Parkinson's. Marion isn't terrible these days. Not a lot going on there though, although, much more than when I was growing up there in the 90s/00s. It's about 45 minutes to Asheville or Hickory. Good luck with your search!

Waynesville area has always been on my radar. I grew up in far NE Georgia. Most of western NC has always kinda felt like home to me.

We would drive through Waynesville when going to Pisgah/Asheville. Seems like a good area. Close enough to the attractions of the area without being too much like liberalised Asheville.

Ideally I’d like to get my family back to NE GA/Western NC. Just need life (ie. Work) to pan out to accommodate that plan.

I am west of Waynesville. 25 minutes from town. 45 from Asheville.
Retired so I don't know jobs.
But, I can say the Waynesville economy is based on tourism.

It comes with the territory, literally. Same with my hometown, Clayton GA and most economies in that region.

Anyone in Boone/Blowing Rock willing to help pull me out? I had to move my truck over to allow the plow guy to clear out my driveway and I parked it in the mulch and now I’m stuck as Chuck.
