So I’ve got a 2006 Taco Sport that I bought new back in the day. I can’t quite pinpoint when this started happening but it’s been a number of years and I’ve never looked into it. The ignition key can be taken out in any position. Yes, I can take the keys out while the truck is running. It’s never bothered me enough to look into it I guess. Just wondering if this is a common thing with these trucks and how pricey it is to correct.

It's requires a new ignition cylinder, its a pain because you'll have 2 keys for the truck, one for door, one for ignition.

It's fairly easy to physically change, but then you need to reprogram the keys.

I figured as much. So is this common with these ignitions? Sounds pricey.

Does it do it with all keys?

If you only have one key get a key made at the dealer by vin.
These keys will come out if they are excessively worn.
Get a cheap key cut and try it before a chip key is cut if you need that.

Only the ignition key. And yes I’m sure it’s way worn. I’ll do what you suggested, maybe. If I get around to it and it starts to bother me enough. ;)

Well, it would be smart to see if that is the issue since you only have one key.
If they cut a good key and it doesn’t work then you know the cyl itself is also shot.
Then you know for sure what you are looking at.
Keep in mind. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper to fix it while you can still turn the key and drive it.
Than to have to have it towed and poss having the cyl drilled out since you can’t turn the key anymore.

You can buy a new ignition cylinder from the dealer and take it and your original keys to a locksmith to have the new cylinder work with the old key.

The old keys might also be worn so bring both of them, assuming you have both.

The cylinder in my passenger door was sticking so I bought a new cylinder set from the dealer (3 cylinders, 2 keys), truck had 140,000 at the time. Very easy to change.

    NP.
Been through this so many times.
A easy job turns into something labor intensive.
If you do go a new cyl , start off with new keys also. (Remember you only have one old key)

Mixing one old key in that mix is asking for trouble.
    Have a good day.
