Mine most not be working cause I left a heavy box on the back seat for the night and never saw or heard any warnings and I live in Canada and it is a 2001 TRD Sport and have had many back seat passengers but never any warnings just saying maybe there is a missfunction in the system.

Although the sensor serves a great purpose you can disable it in the Toyota Remote app account/notifications turn off rear seat notifications.

I rec'd this notification today for the first time in my 10 months of ownership. I have nothing in the back seat, I don't know why it was triggered.

Maybe it's to remind people not to leave kids or pets in their car.

I like that Toyota encourages you to check the rear seat but why stop there. Who knows what could be lurking under the bed of your Taco?

There's been some heartbreaking stories of people forgetting their babies/toddlers in the back seat. If it saves a kid it's worth it.

Not all people who forget are terrible parents. When you're stressed out from having to drop off kids, get to work, lack of sleep from doing night feedings, etc. sometimes things fall through the cracks. Hell, I forgot to drop off my kid at school once (I'd drop them off then head to work) because I had a critical meeting with a huge client and was still going over the agenda in my head and went into autopilot and headed to work. My kid didn't say a word or make a peep the whole drive. If I didn't need to grab my laptop out of the back seat I wouldn't have even known they were there. They came into the office with me and hung out with our admin until my meeting was done and then I got them back to school. Shit happens sometimes and it made me add an extra step to my morning routine. Hell, I think these are a great idea:

Software updates will make vehicles that didn't have this function work in vehicles that have the correct firmware or hardware installed. So those that are seeing this for the first time, this could be your answer, you've been upgraded to Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ software version.

Mine notified me a couple of times in the past 2 months--our kids are adults now.

I went to my truck and opened the backseat door at least once.

    No notifications since.

I keep the bodies in the backseat. I like to not be reminded of them.

IMO its this... I know one day I put of bunch of heavy bags on my passenger side of my truck and the truck kept dinging to put the passenger seat belt on. I'm sure your rear seats are doing something similar.

I wonder if this might be a requirement for new trucks? I recently rode in a co-workers ‘21 or ‘22 Ford Ranger and his came-up with a similar message every time he shut the truck off. I don’t recall there being anything in the rear seat.

The new Fords are doing this. We have a new F150 at work and it says this every time you shut the truck off whether there is anything in the back or not. I don't think the Tacoma has any rear seat sensors.

I don't think it senses if something is actually on the back seat or not. It sees that a back door was opened when you got in the car but not when you got out.

I think this is correct. There was a link on page 2 that explains how it works and it's based on the doors.

There's definitely no sensors in the rear seat of my 2021. If there's any "sensor" it's based on the door like others said.

I think this is right. Got this today for the first time despite having kids in the back several times. The difference today was one kid climbed out on his brother's side for some reason.
When i locked the door i got the alert.
Guessing because it saw 4 doors open before the drive and only 3 doors open at the end.

If the rear seat belts are clipped in, you'll get that message.

What is our world coming to? Have we evolved into a world that we have to have notifications to remind us of our basic responsibilities in life? Maybe next will be a warning sticker on our pants to take them down before taking a dump.
