    I bought a wheel for $20 (x4=100) and a cat for 50

that truck looks like a great deal

obviously tires are tricky because a new set is $1k no matter what wheels you mount them on

and cats/downpipes used will take some walking around to find, like from a totaled truck partout
new is a click away online but costs more

What a day. I went over at 4 and took a good look. It had some more issues than cats. Basically, everything from manifold back was gone. Then a broken windshield and brake lines are toast. Interior had a little mold. Engine, frame and title good. Also, no wheels. Owner finally showed up with 2 Chinese universal cats in hand. I left without making an offer. Owner called me back instantly and said he would take $700. It is now mine and being towed to a nearby shop. TBH, I do not like looks the front end of the sport model plus the fact it was an auto with no rear locker. I figure at least $2500 to get it to pass inspection. Change of plan. I am going to remove the body then sand blast and paint the frame and part it out. Engine and tranny are already sold heading to a buddy of mine in VT. I have already doubled my cash and hope to get top dollar for the frame. I just do not like the 2008 platform. If it was a 93 or 94 in same condition, I would go all in. This one is just not for me.

Is it worth all that trouble to sell the frame?

You said your “mechanic” had this 4Runner. Why didn’t you ask him to thoroughly check it out and give you his assessment of it?

Really confused following this thread. You went from the getting this 4 runner as a winter beater to parting it out because you didn't like the platform. What's wrong with the platform to disqualifying it from being a winter beater? A rear locker can be added if you wish but it's still a 2WD.
On a side note - find another mechanic.

I feel bad for his buddy that bought the engine and transmission. At this rate hopefully it doesn’t grenade on him at startup

I just do not want to put $2500 into it to get it road worthy. Mechanic went off the same info owner gave him and never looked at it. He thought he was doing me a solid by giving me the first look as he knows I am in the market for a Toyota with a rear locker. Owner is a tool. He claimed it was an 08 with a rear locker. Well it is a sport without a locker. Then it was chopped at the manifold and everything back is missing.
Too much work to get it inspected in New York. Too many question marks.

A knowledgeable mechanic should have gave it a thorough inspection and know if it was worth buying. Either one of you guys could've have easily ran the VIN to know what you are getting. Something fishy about a mechanic pushing the vehicle on you. Most shops would rebuild that 4runner and will easily make a profit reselling to you for a decent price, especially in this used car market. I have a bad feeling that the motor is shot likely from a blown HG so you may end up losing a buddy in the sale. Sounds like the PO was in the process of parting it out.

Sounds like a lot more trouble parting it out then just repairing it’s issues and flipping it.

I am still stuck on wanting to sandblast and paint the frame. Is it a rusted out New York frame that you are trying to sell in great condition?

I do sand blasting and metal work on the side. I thought the market for 4runner frames would be like 1st gen Tacomas. It is not .
