Used to do cleanouts as part of a property management gig in college and man, seems every other house was one of these.

Some of them I can still smell just from memory 13 years later.

Edit: But the one that takes the cake for wiggin me out was the one that we later found out was a former cartel house that had clearly had a DIY prison cage built in the garage. Rest of the house was SPOTLESS.

 

Not nearly on that level but I worked on the electrical plans for a group of houses. Going to inspect them, the occupant of one had cut a sizeable hole in the side of the house so his horse could drink out of the bathtub.

 

Knowing quite a few "horse people" this doesn't entirely surprise me

Waited about a month for my stair nose and now I’m finally able to get it installed tomorrow. It’s going on two sunken sections like this:


We had to install the floor without the nosings (I guess that’s common?), so we did our best to keep the floor boards aligned so the nosing will fit flush, but there are some boards that inevitably aren’t flush with one another:


This will no doubt cause some gaps. The question is: does anyone have a recommendation for getting them all flush? Or should I just leave it alone, install the nosings, and use wood filler? The floors are pre-finished.

 

Are you able to run a saw along the edge to cut off the longer ends of the floorboards?

 

I could do that. Might be sketchy if I get chip-out, yeah? We’d also be getting rid of the tongue of almost all of the boards.

 

You can run tape along the cut path to combat chipping. Why do you need to keep the exposed tongue? Does the nose fasten to it?

Yep it’s tongue and groove. Here’s the sketch of the nosing:


We tried to keep a 2” gap from the finished end of the boards to the end of my riser. I think it just helps with alignment, but if we can lop it off and use PL3 is should be stout?

 

Oh. That's a tough one. What's the longest piece/widest gap going to be?

 

I don’t think any of them are longer than 2”. But across the step we can see about 1/8” of variation. So some are 2” and here and there some are 1 15/16” or 1 7/8”.

 

Maybe shave only the ones that are 2" down by a 1/16th or 1/8"? Just to shorten the gap? That way you still have positive engagement on most of the length?
