Does anyone here do their own taxes? Have you used any of the free tax prep programs available on the IRS site?

We've been using Turbotax and H&R Block programs in the past and they were fine. In '08 we employed an accountant that was suggested to us and they wanted $800. and we told them to stick it. We did our own taxes using Turbotax for $50 and the difference was $15 on the bottom line. I don't remember if the accountant or TT was less.

Last year we used Free Tax USA from the IRS site with good results.

Anyone else have stories to tell? We sold our commercial property and are looking at that to be part of our tax prep. Anything you'd recommend?

No real help here. Wife does a run through online, then takes it to the folks that have our annuities - because it's a deal for being a client. It doesn't win the lottery! But, we're small potatoes.

I've used taxact for close to 15 years. Main issue with all them is, is the $$ for filing state taxes. Why does making it easier for them, cost me $40 or $50. Issue last year was a $400 difference between what taxact said I should get and what I actually got back. Was much more than I usually get back, but still....

    Good morning fellow Porchatonians!

We worked the apiary yesterday - took off the winterization kits and then set the hives up to split them - loaded with bees already. 1st time all of our hives survived the winter.

We also got our 2d booster shots yesterday. Just a little arm soreness at the injection site this morning. Life is good.

I've used TurboTax for many years but had to give up on it. It just got too crazy to navigate through. They've ruined it, IMO. This year, we used a tax prep service for the first time ever, and at about the same cost. Our return is simple enough at this point. Took an hour, refunds arrived shortly thereafter, no stress, what a blessing! Now I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I see a TurboTax ad, and realize I don't have to endure that misery ever again.

I gave up on Turbo Tax a few years back. I use an accountant now. The cost is $350. The accountant knows all the rules and tax breaks available to us plus is a great guy to run tax and withdrawal strategies through.

I not only gave up on Turbo Tax I stopped Quicken too. Quicken support has vanished in the last 3 years leaving the most important aspect of quicken, downloads from banks and financial institutions, to the banks and financial institutions.

Another rain day. Music lesson today and a few small projects after that.

    Morning.
More washing on the boat carpet today…
Oil, blood, poop, don’t come off very easy.
Not looking for perfection in a 27 year old bass boat.
Only thing I just found out that actually worked is tire and wheel cleaner.

Tried for years to get this stain less noticeable.
Going to look pretty spiffy this year.

    My miracle formula

I don't have time to type all my nasty encounters with TurboTax.

I have to do orders this AM and then disconnect and re-route 120V and 240V lines to the heat pump - the south east POST and south beam of the cover are right there. Builder communicated this to me yesterday - we all thought it would clear. Store run required. PITA!

    Morning all:

That's a big difference in the boat carpet Mike, I have one boat with carpet in it but it's not that stained, maybe I'll give it a year or two to see if your carpet falls apart before trying it!

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Peoples! Got about a third of the wiring panel done yesterday. Spiffy edge trim from Amazon came right when I was ready to put them in, so no waiting. Hope to have it basically done today - we'll see. Patience....

After 27 years I wouldn’t hold it against it. i used a real stiff brush. If it didn’t come apart I don’t think it will for the foreseeable future.

    1 10ft length of 1/2" rebar is cheaper than a 24" piece at Lowe's. FYI. :D:p

    No, it is hermetically sealed.

I was not speaking for myself, but for the person buying. You guys are way too serious sometimes.
