New Tacoma, new to forum

    This looks like a warm and friendly place to hang out...

    I traded my 07 Dodge Ram 1500ST 2wd, short bed, six cylinder, six speed for a 11 Tacoma Access Cab, 4x4, standard bed, six cylinder, six speed and I believe it will fit my lifestyle much better.

    The Dodge with the six cylinder and 2wd lacked power, and had trouble on the remote moutain road I live on. To get to town I have a steep gravel driveway, then a private gravel access road, finally onto a one and a half lane paved mountain road, steep, with bad grading and curves, finally into state highway, half way up a mountain pass.

    The Tacoma seems very happy in this territory, and will seem even happier once I put on a set of Firestone Winterforce UV studded snow tires, in the 245/70R17 size on new glossy black rock crawler style rims, 17x8. The stock Dunlop Gandtrek tires seem far more suited to a minivan or 2wd highway vehicle than the mountain backcountry. I am sure they will make fine summer tires, as long I as don't get too far off a gravel road. I see a set of Cooper Discover ATR as three season tires.

    In the last 21 years, I had a 85 FJ60 Land Cruiser, then a 94 Toyota Pickup for 12 years and 217k happy miles, then a "great deal" on the Dodge (2/3 the cost of the Prerunner, both new vehicles), and finally back to a Toyota.

    The good news is that it uses the same oil filter (Wix 51348) as my wife's jeep and uses real gear oil in the meatballs and gear boxes, plus the same tires sizes. I suspect my gas milage will go down over the dodge since this has twice the towing capacity. First towing test will be this weekend, with rented box trailer going after a load of house hold goods for wife's sister. I don't see any new tooling to maintain this vehicle either...

    I am bit of a gear head, having worked as a heavy duty mechanic in the past, and currently have three 60's vintage Dodge Trucks, a Military Power Wagon, a Town Wagon and Utiline pickup, all running and registered for the road, plus I am a long distance motorcyle rider and have a couple of vintage BMW airheads, a R80ST and R80RT.

    Looking forward to learning and sharing, I guess the first order of business, after getting tires squared away, is a proper front bumper with winch.

    245/75R16 is the stock tire size, these snow tires (from my last truck) are 245/70R17, so basically the same size, just on bigger rims. Snow tires don't need to be oversize for a variety of reasons.

    On the other hand I like the Cooper Discover series tires and have worn out more than a few set of the S/T tires.

    ps: my new truck is the SR5 package, and they list a wide variety of different tire and wheel sizes, up to 18" rims. The wife's wrangler sahara came with 265/70R18, a size with a lousy tread and style selection. Stock on this truck are the 245/75R16.

    Seems like all the good tires are being offered in 17" sizes these days, so we put 245/75R17 Bridgestone Blizzacks on the jeep this year. The SMALLER tire size improves the torque curve for winter driving since it has miserable 3.21 axle ratios. At least the Tacoma has 3.73, while my 94 pickup has 4.11 as did the FJ60. Since my old pickup had 245/70R17 stock tires (also with the miserable 3.21 rear end), that is the size my snow tires are in...and the Rock Crawler type rims are inexpensive, and Summit racings handling and shipping charge was $12. I ordered the Crager brand of rock crawler rims, powder coat gloss black

    And since I own my OWN tire mounting machine (Ok Harbor Freight manual machine, but it works), I can swap tires to my heart's content.
